Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, and South Carolina are Deep South. The rest of the South is Tennessee, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Virginia. Texas is not technically the South, but is looked upon fondly by Southerners as close kin. Florida, as a whole, is not at all considered the South, but areas of the panhandle and from Gainesville north will sometimes, maybe, be acknowledged as Southern.

What is Southern is defined by shared culture, attitudes, and traditions. It is not about what's in history books, or old money, or cities vs towns, and it certainly isn't defined by where schools may be located or if any northerners live there or not. Response #1 is correct about South and Deep South.

There really isn't a different between South and Deep South and all a question like this will bring is a bunch of nitpicking. I will agree that there is a difference between big city Southern being its own mini-category though. A lot of Northerners also fit in with Southern lifestyles and not all Southerners are ladylike and well-mannered.

The big reason why people mention Deep South is because Deep South = closer to Alabama therefore there will be a greater number of connections. Every year, dozens and dozens of girls from Atlanta, Memphis, Mississippi come to Alabama whereas only a few come from Kentucky, Virginia, or even St. Louis. It's not like the culture is that different or more valued at all. It's just a numbers thing.

In general terms, deep south = redneck or rural. All of bama, MS, Ark, TN (minus nashville), GA (minus ATL), SC, and rural parts of Texas.

South is south of Virginia (sorry if it snows you are not the south) so from NC to FL to TX...mostly cities.

As far as greek terms here, deep south is going to be areas with high actives. Someone said Miss, but very few Miss people come here. We do have a ton of Atlanta people though.

It snows in Tennessee so is it not considered the south either? All of Alabama isn't redneck. Have you been to Huntsville or MB??? You left out Knoxville and Memphis, charleston and Savannah. There's plenty of places in the south not rural and redneck
