old row v new row (sorority)

by:

Hey yall! I went to preview weekend and the invite parties this year! I plan to rush in the fall! While on campus i saw and heard a lot of old row v new row stuff! Ive made it a point to not find out which houses are new and old row just so ill choose the house, i feel i belong. I know traditionally it the oldest houses i guess! But, i was wondering what an okd row house gets thats better than a new row house! Im sorry! Im kind of clueless! And i know im going to have about ten actives tell me to keep my options open! I definately plan to maximize my options and rank on chemistry rather than status! I know the question is kind of irrelevent! I just feel kind of out of place while all the other pnms talk and i didnt even know there was such a thing!

In the grand scheme of things, old row gets old row shirts and other apparel, their dues are higher than new row houses but not by that much from what I've heard (all of the new row and old row houses are either renovating, expanding, and/or building new houses, so everyone's dues will increase within the next few years), old row throws their own parties, usually at a bar on the strip, and really just notoriety as being on old row. Most of the old row houses are considered top tier, despite the quality of their recent pledge classes and overall reputation. I hope this helps! Keep up the good attitude! I know you'll get in to the house that's best for you!

I really love exclamation points!

Hahaha! I was going to post the same thing. Nothing like using an exclamation point after EVERY sentence to give a polished, intelligent, classy impression in writing (!).

Thanks "well"!
That really helps a lot! But what do you mean they throw their own parties? Doesn't everyone throw their own parties? Or does everyone just go to thier parties? And where does budweiser come in? I heard they they sponser old row or something? Also, do the old row houses not get to be old row anymore if they move there house to the new street? Do old row houses have stricter rules with standards and their judicial boards?

Does not mean much except for the weaker houses who can still claim that status.

Standards is a voting process by your piers. If a member of the house does not like something you do or say they can submit you to standards. Like looking out for each other so noone gets out if hand. Then you go to a meeting with your advisor and an elected group of your piers. You all talk about what you did. So make sure you choose wisely if you pick a house that is judgmental it could be a nightmare. All houses have some sort of standards process.

What I mean by parties is that the old row fraternities and sororities will throw a party together. Only old row has these kind of parties and only people in old row can get in to the parties. Budweiser sponsors old row (you obviously know since you asked where they come in) and they help old row with their old row parties (the ones that they throw together) and I would guess with the shirts as well. The whole location part of old row houses moving streets doesn't affect their status as being on old row. It used to be location based, then it was the year the house came to campus. However, some new row houses were here before some old row houses. An example: ADPi was here before Phi Mu, Alpha Gam, Kappa, Alpha Chi , etc. I can't say anything about their j-boards as I don't know how their's work. However, standards are pretty much the same across the board for both old row and new row houses, with only a few being very strict. It's mainly about tradition, being involved in something bigger than yourself, and being a part of a family that has the houses concerned. Good luck with rush girl! Remember to keep an open mind!

Old row has one extra party than new row, not several parties. So one extra t-shirt, one party. Some guys only date old row girls and some girls only date old row guys. Who cares, if that's the kind of guy you want than you have bigger problems then old vs. new row. Old row remains old row even if they move.

Old Row does NOT mean the oldest houses on campus....thats the first thing here. The first 3 houses on campus were:
1. Kappa Delta
2. Alpha Delta Pi
3. Zeta Tau Alpha

And not all of these houses are old row. old row is basically a label that is bought by a sorority to feel better about themselves. Old row does not make a difference for sororities, but it does for fraternities because these are actually the oldest houses for them and their pledgeship is harder. so for a sorority, don't worry too much about it and keep an open mind. After all, it's the girls that make up a sorority, not a label.

First Circle was the equivalent of Old Row for girls until Alpha Gam and Tri-Delt moved.

No current collegians know or use the term "First Circle" or even "circle sororities" anymore.

Actually, Alpha Gam, Tri-Delt, and KD throw a First Circle party every other year.

Right but first circle honestly may represent the three most overrated sororities too, which is a big reason why nobody uses that term or knows who's in it outside of that one party

some sorority nationals have VERY strict standards and won't let them be affiliated with an alcohol company

This is probably the best post I've seen on this site. Everything that was said explained the old row/new row confusion I had. Thanks
