out of state issues

by:

Hi everyone! I'm trying my hardest to look into the best sororities but I have a few issues that are stressing me out! I'm from New York, attending Bama this Fall, and rushing this Fall. Being an out of state student, to attend Bama alone is already pretty expensive right now. I most definitely want to rush, but I want to join a sorority with the cheapest or at least the most beneficial financial requirements!! I'm not very picky on whether I want to be apart of a small or big sorority. My grades aren't exactly outstanding either, I'm pushing for a 3.0 GPA at the moment. I've heard that there are certain sororites who look more into grades but I can't figure out which!!! I'm pulling for the rest of my senior year to get my grades as high as I can, and my other curricular activites are great, but if anybody can give me any feedback on which sororites might fit best for my issues right now, or just any advice at all..I would appreciate it SO much. Thank you!!! ROLL TIDE!

Hey girl! Okay, so pretty much all the sororities at Alabama are the same size give or take. Each chapter has about 280 girls. A 3.0 is honestly not that high, but that doesn't mean you won't get into a sorority! The sororities who put a big emphasis on grades are Chi O, Alpha Gam, and Alpha Chi. I know that financially it's hard, especially for an out of state student. As far as I know, the most expensive sororities are Tri Delt, DG, KD, Alpha Gam, Phi Mu, and Kappa at about $6,000/year. Also adpi is getting a new house so their dues might have gone up but from what I've heard before this year they were one of the cheapest. I know alpha phi and gamma phi are getting new houses next year as well so their dues may go up as well. I don't really know what to tell you about which sorority you would fit best in! It's really all about your personality...I know finances and grades are a huge part of it but being in a sorority is so much more than that! It's about finding the house that you feel the most comfortable in. Hope this helps!

I agree that Gamma Phi may be a little more expensive because of their new house, but I don't know if Alpha Phi is still going to get one since their sign came down quite a while ago. It was really only up for preview weekend.

Work on your grades right now. A 3.0 is low by many sorority standards, but if you are great in other ways, it might be ok!! Make that your priority right now. Come down with an open mind, and maximize those options until the end of rush! Good luck!!

I'm pretty sure Alpha Phi broke ground on their new house a few weeks ago, so thats happening as far as I know. Honestly dues will probably continue to go up with all sororities and its going to keep getting more and more competitive! Grades are an easy way for ALL houses to drop you, especially when there are 21,000 girls coming though and each house can only take about 100 new girls.
Good luck! Take it all in stride and enjoy every minute! You'll end up where you're supposed to be no matter what.

2,100 girls not 21,000. Please learn numbers. You are in college. And don't even try to call it a typo. You had a comma in there.

There were just under 2,000 rushing last August.

Look for a smaller, older house, with plans to build. However, most of them are planning at least major renovations are expansions.

A 3.0 is borderline. Do what you can to raise it, even by .1 or .2.

Forget that concept of "best" sororities. All the Alabama groups have excellent students, campus leaders, beauties, popular girls. They also have an assortment of the rest of us - fair students, good followers, nice girls but not raving beauties. The lowest ranks sororities are still heads above groups at many other schools.

Look for the group where you find kindred souls, where you feel at home.

for some new row houses that have a lot of great, involved girls but not necessarily are known to be super studious. Some houses are also newer or building numbers so are more than happy to take a couple of grade risks (which a 3.0 would be) wen other groups may pass over you just based on that. Don't loose heart though because as long as you are well rounded your GPA may not keep you from joining a house with lots to offer! I would recommend really looking into Theta, GPB, DG, and Alpha Phi. Like they said, dues are expensive here and each of those just finished or is building a new house, but would probably be the most likely based on GPA.

National sororities all have a standard GPA cut off. It will vary from year to year based on All Greek Women /All Women average. It usually is at or above those makes. You can find out what those are....published in Bama GPA ranking report... you would be safest to shoot above what average is higher. Some nationals allow for "scholarship risks" but limit the number. Being in a house will take time from studies. The houses want to be able to activate their pledges. If they don't make the grades during the pledge time they can't become active sisters. This is why they look at GPA before a PNM ever is extended a bid. Many houses have GPA being the first reason they release a PNM There are exceptions to every rule but don't put yourself in the position to be the exception...study!

UA sororities no longer require a new member to "make her grades" before she's allowed to join. All new members are initiated around mid to late October. And that's not just at UA. Almost all campuses now require new members/pledges to be initiated within a 10-week or so frame.
