the machine

by:

Who agrees that it is time to get rid of this 19th century embarrassment? If we want to move forward and not be the laughing stock of the entire country, we have to throw off the yoke of these dictators. We don't have to act like Col. Sanders just because we're 'Bama. It is possible to invite black men and women to be a part of our greek system without having our entire society collapse. It could make it much stronger, just like it did the football team.

Come on, guys. If we all do it at once, we can be successful. Think about it.

Its invisible on a day to day basis. It does not make us a laughing stock. It is a tradition that has been passed down for years. Its purpose is not to keep African Americans out of IFC and Panhellenic.. The fact that you worded your plea the way you did makes me think you are not a member of either the IFC or Panhellenic, and you are just attempting to stir something up.

I disagree. You can see this whole string of comments about how the machine does make decisions for IFC and Pan. I agree that it's probably not its only purpose, but it is one purpose. Not all traditions are good. This one reminds me of Jim Crow. As an Alabamian and a Pan member, I think I'm entitled to give my opinion. If it stirs something up, I think that would be great. Do I think it will? No. I think we as a school are pretty self-satisfied under the control of the machine!

the Machine may cause problems with integrating the Greek system, but that isn't its main purpose at all.

your right to post your anonymous opinion.
And actually, I agree that the system shoule be integrated, but ...
1. The Machine is not opposing any such efforts ... you are in fantasyland
2. These type of exhortations are always anonymous and comes from people who are irrelevant. If you want integration, then stand up in your sorority. Be somebody.

True that it's not the main purpose of the machine but it certainly one of the things that the machine does. There isn't any dispute about that.

Let traditions continue, and I am a northerner bytheway

I'm all in favor of traditions (southerner, btw), but a segregated greek system is one that I think should go by the wayside. I think we've evolved past that as a society -- even as a southern society.

attempting to disguise bigotry and hate under the cloak of tradition changes nothing- still bigotry and hate

Seriously I just think those wackos from mallet write all this racial stuff on here to get Greeks fighting cuz mallet is just about the only opposition to the machine. Seriously find something better to do with your life than degrade the greek system which so many people love and participate in!

It is beyond ridiculous that you think calling for an integrated greek system is degrading to the greek system. Should you be instead looking at the human beings you degrade by not making sororities and fraternities available to black as well as white students? BTW, I'm not from Mallet and they are not the only ones who think the machine is a little big-brother-like and disgusting.

If it is "big-brother-like and disgusting" then why are you greek? No one is forced to be in a fraternity or sorority so if you don't believe in their values and traditions, why even join?

I didn't write the comment, but I think you would find that there are a huge number of greeks who don't like everything about the system. I too think that at this time in history our greek system should be integrated. As far as the machine goes, I think they should do some soul examining and step up.

Everybody loves 'Bama, but also we all want it to be as good as it can be. No one is being critical, just calling for some change that is too long in coming, frankly.

Your message is a bit disjointed, but I agree with the sentiments. We need an integrated greek system at Alabama.
