advice please!
by: BamaBelleI'm a senior in high school and I plan to attend Alabama. I'm in honors classes with a 3.8 GPA, I'm captain of our marching band's colorguard, I'm secretary of our chapter of NHS, I've placed every year at FBLA state, and I'm involved in numerous other clubs. I consider myself to be fairly pretty and friendly. I want to join a sorority at Alabama, but the thing is I've been hearing about how expensive they are, and my family already has to pay for tuition. My family isn't poor, but we're not rich either. We're middle class, and my parents are already paying for me to attend Alabama in the first place, and I just don't know if we'd be able to afford any super expensive sorority. I really wanted to be in Alpha Chi, but I'd be open-minded about any sorority with a good reputation. How expensive would being in a sorority be?

First year is most expensive, with extra fees. Beyond that, not so bad. Sometimes living in the house is cheaper than in a dorm. You should be able to work part time during school and summers to help pay the extra cost. But don't run up a lot of loans only to get a degree in something that won't pay that much.

I don't know you and there are many reasons you seem to be set on Alabama (close to home/family, tradition etc) but I also would chime in with some other posters here, and say that with your qualifications, please don't limit yourself in college choices. With your grades and accomplishments, you can apply (and get in) to a bunch of great colleges that offer not only academic scholarships, but have strong financial aid programs for middle class families. This could free up money for your family to pay your dues. However, if you choose to stick with UA, working to pay your dues is not that hard, though I go to a school where all the sororities offer both merit and need based financial aid, I am not a recipient of financial aid and pay my own dues because my parents are not really supportive of my membership in a sorority. You just need to stay focused and have good time management skills, and of course, budgeting skills. This is definitely something you should talk about with your parents.
On a side note, it makes me a little sad that some of the advice here is to hide your financial situation to increase your chances of receiving a bid. I guess if that's what you have to do, that's what you have to do but it is a sad reminder to me that not all places value socioeconomic diversity as much as where I am from and where I go to school. :(
good luck with senior year! don't worry too much now :)
