advice please!

I'm a senior in high school and I plan to attend Alabama. I'm in honors classes with a 3.8 GPA, I'm captain of our marching band's colorguard, I'm secretary of our chapter of NHS, I've placed every year at FBLA state, and I'm involved in numerous other clubs. I consider myself to be fairly pretty and friendly. I want to join a sorority at Alabama, but the thing is I've been hearing about how expensive they are, and my family already has to pay for tuition. My family isn't poor, but we're not rich either. We're middle class, and my parents are already paying for me to attend Alabama in the first place, and I just don't know if we'd be able to afford any super expensive sorority. I really wanted to be in Alpha Chi, but I'd be open-minded about any sorority with a good reputation. How expensive would being in a sorority be?

Most sororities cost around $2,000-$3,000 a semester here at Alabama. Alpha Chi was the most expensive 2 years ago when I went through rush, and i'm sure not much has changed

$4400 first semester and it'll be around $3000 after that and I'm in a new row sorority.

My daughter was in a good new row sorority and it cost us about $10,000 a year when you add in all the extras...t shirts and so many other fees. If you can't afford it then don't go through rush....it will save you and the sorority that you pledge much trouble. I know of many girls who have to drop out after they find out the sticker shock of joining a sorority at Alabama...it ain't cheap. During Rush....I know that many sororities will shy away from pledging girls that say that they have been working through the summer to help pay for their education. Sororities don't want to be stuck with a dead beat. No offense.

I did not realize that sororities consider hard working students dead beats...no offense!

I've known a few girls in top old row houses that have worked throughout school to help pay for the dues and extras that come with being in a sorority. It's totally doable, and since it sounds like you have great qualifications, I say rush to see if you click with a group. Being a member of sorority definitely has some great benefits and you will make life long friends. Good luck!

I'm in a sorority and I paid the dues by saving money that I made working over the summer. My family isn't poor or anything, but since a sorority doesn't further my education my parents didn't find it necessary to pay for. I just don't mention it to any of my sisters and it had never been an issue. I would recommend going through rush anyway, and if you are concerned about price, then look more closely at new row houses. New row houses provide about the same experience, but at a lesser price, usually.

Could be to wait until sophomore year to rush to save up money and to get to know different girls in several sororities. That way you'll have a better idea of which house is best suited for you, and then you can make a decision as to whether or not to join one. A lot of old row houses have members from the middle class. I know of one girl who doesn't meet a stranger and rushed her sophomore year to become an alpha chi. She came from a middle class family from vestavia and loves her sorority. Personality counts for a lot too! Really the bottom line is that if you want to be involved badly enough, you'll find a way to make it work. Plus an invitation to the top houses is not exactly easy to come by, so if you're lucky enough to be chosen - go for it!

If you think that pledging a new row house is cheaper think again. I also paid about 10,000 a year for being in a sorority for a total cost over 4 years of 40,000. Oh and by the way I was a Zeta. You have to have cash to be in a sorority. That is the TRUTH!!

With the big new houses opening, the costs are even higher.

My daughter entered UA with a GPA of 4.62. She did get an academic scholarship offer at UA among a couple of other colleges she applied to. She chose to go to The University of Alabama because of it's reputation. She also is in a sorority, I don't know if it's old row or new row, I'm don't know a thing about that. One of the main reasons she chose this sorority is because of it having the highest sorority GPA on campus, 10 hours of supervised study hall a week. I will tell you it's almost $6900 per semester to live in the house with the meal plan. On the upside of that..she made the President's List by having a 4.0 GPA both semesters. ROLL TIDE ROLL

Hey girl! Dont listen to the negativity! Granted if you go greek you will e surrounded by a good amount of rich girls flaunting money but im a middle class girl in an old row house! My parents do pay my dues but im here to say youll still fit in if youre yourself! That being said just dont talk about money problems, instead get a job a pay your dues! Its not bad! Bamas classes arent that hard so you can take it all on if you can manage your time! Look if you want to go greek there are houses for you! The extra expenses are mostly optional! So no worries! Itll be fine! First semester is the hardest to pay for so start saving money now!!!!!! Old row new row no probs!!!!
