racially diverse

by:

I know sororities are mostly white, but which would you say is the most racially diverse? And out of say 400 members, how many are we talking? 5? 10? 20?

Honestly, all the houses do have girls of different races. However, I would say the New Row sororities are a lot more racially diverse, and in general, each house probably has on average about 5-15 girls of a different race, per pledge class. However, I want to emphasize that the low amount of diversity IS NOT due to any sort of systematic racism or whatever snowflakes like to claim. There isn't a lot of diversity in the houses simply because girls of different races choose not to rush. Our chapters would love to expand in diversity, but it's hard when there's such a small margin of girls to pick from... Also girls of different races are treated just the same as everyone else, they need good grades, good demeanor, etc to get a bid... We're not just going to pledge a girl who doesn't meet our criteria just because we want more diversity.

Many of the African American girls who want to join a sorority join a Pan Hellenic sorority. Ones that want to join a Panhellenic sorority are recruited according to the same standards other pnms are. I've even noticed that because there are fewer African American girls going through recruitment for Panhellenic, houses compete for those girls. If an African American girl with high academics doesn't get a bid it's probably because of a personality issue -- too shy or too awkward. Many houses will take African American girls with lower grades, no pre-written rec, fewer activities, not as good looking, etc. because they want to show diversity. But it's all up to the house. If you don't see much diversity, you might want to steer clear.

several have risen up to be chapter president and hold all sorts of offices, so yes on the fitting in. Just like white girls, it is what you make it. Also, the present Miss U of Alabama is a woman of color and I believe in Phi Mu and she just won Miss Alabama (like going to a Miss America next). so racial issues are not really a thing here. Like there is not racial tension around campus or stuff like that.

I would say theta and gamma phi seem to be the most diverse, at least thats what I noticed when I went through rush. In my pledge class, we only have 3 non white girls, myself included.

I heard that the reason G Phi is ranked so low is that 20 years ago or something they were the first house to pledge a couple of African American girls. They were practically shunned. Still, I think it's cool that they can trace their diversity in attitudes back that far.

I didn't know the history of diversity and that G Phi was so accepting. That makes me really respect them and I'm glad that they're rising in popularity

Not to turn it into a Gamma Phi thread but it's crazy to think that they were essentially punished for doing the right thing. I never knew why they were considered bottom tier before reading any of this. I always figured it was for some shallow Greek Rank stereotype.
