what do parents do on bid day?

by: Bama-bound

I'm headed to Alabama in the fall, and will be taking part in recruitment. My parents are planning to come up for Bid day, assuming I make it that far. So if I get a Bid, I know they will be outside waiting for me to run by, but then what? The YouTube videos of Bid Day always show all the girls, but never their parents. Do they hang around, or just leave?

People start congregating around the houses pretty early so I would suggest that you tell them where you think you're going to end up so that they don't have to run around everywhere. Obviously, if you end up getting a bid from another house you can call them and let them know. After all the girls run out of the stadium, you're going to have to find your name and usually your big will take pictures with you and your family. After that you all go inside and there will be food and refreshments that you and your parents can have. You usually just sit inside with your big for a while before actives start to let you know what to do next. After eating, most houses have their girls go back to their dorms to get stuff for the bid day retreat and you leave within a few hours. Your parents should leave before you go back to your dorm.

It's just your bid day big. It might be a girl who had a rush crush on you, it might be a relative or friend, it might be no one you know. She's just there to give you your bag of goodies and your sign and welcome you to the house.

You will be met by a sophomore active on bid day. Depending on how big your pledge class is some actives will be holding the signs of names for ether one or two girls. However, the term "big" is used loosely and isn't your permanent big. Each house pairs the freshmen with sophomore every week/few weeks leading up to big/little reveal. They do so in order for the freshmen to meet and connect with as many possible permanent bigs as possible.

We were totally screwed up due to the constant rain-outs and some stupid computer glitch. That is why we didn't get to have Bryant Denny in the morning. By the time we were told to arrive, the FB team needed it for their practice. So, we had to go in the stupid parking garage by the houses (oh, did I mention the constant rain? Yeah. We needed a canoe that week. Our poor shoes). A lot of girls parents who made reservations to fly out after a typical "brunch" missed out on bid day. Luckily, my mom flew out the next day. So, have them plan to leave later in the day and have them sight-see after brunch. We had to bust like mad women to get our stuff together for our retreats because the buses couldn't be pushed back. Our Zap photos were so rushed because there wasn't enough time for them to get to everyone scheduled after the first groupings. Pro tip: pre-pack a bag with a blanket, a swimsuit, a towel, some toiletries and a change of clothes.
