the important of legacy status is decline rapidly. since recruitment here is so competitive and there are so many over qualified girls, legacy status isn't too important unless you're a legacy of like a founder or something.

Usually a chapter is required to extend the courtesy of asking legacies to the first invited round. After that any legacy may be released. If a legacy is invited to pref, most nationals require that she be placed on the first bid list.

But a number of Alabama sororities have more legacies coming through they they could ever hope to pledge. They could fill two or three new member classes with legacies.
So they start early by releasing some legacies after first round. It's a blessing - you'll know right away to look for a group that you're a better fit for.

If your national sorority has a policy of a courtesy invite you can't drop legacies after the first round whether you know you're going to drop them or not, it's just not an option. It's horribly rude to the mom/gma whatever. But if there's a sorority that doesn't have that policy they could release them whenever they want but I'm not sure of any chapters like that

There are very old sororities (on this campus and elsewhere) with way too many recruitment legacies who WILL make legacy cuts after first round. That's the way the math runs due to the age and size of the individual organization. Other orgs have manipulated their list of who qualifies as a legacy to cut down on actual legacy numbers. The mathematical need to reduce legacy numbers is there, and the groups do use these methods. Sorry legacies, its been a fact in some groups for awhile and there are complaints here on GR about it but not much you can do. Just be happy some other group may bid you for who you are.

I heard lots of tri-delt legacies got dropped. Generally I hear their nationals is less strict on legacies. KD and KKG are big on legacies. Of course this doesn't mean you'll get a bid from them if you're a legacy, or you won't get one from DDD as a legacy but these are generalisations.

Unluckily for tri delt legacies they're not required to give you a courtesy invite. They're not even required to put you on their first bid list if you pref them which I think is kind of wrong. If you don't want a legacy, you should be cutting them before preference

Legacies and recs don't carry a lot of weight at KD unless they have a direct connection to the chapter. A few years ago they bragged about cutting a PNM with a rec from KD's national president at the time.

Tri-Delt has been known to keep legacies until the last day and then not offer a pref invitation.

legacy status is not important anymore. sorry to burst your bubbly, hunny, but coming here and being a legacy does not guarantee you a spot in any house. a few decades ago, even a few years ago legacy status was of the utmost importance and you were basically guaranteed a bid to that house, seeing that you were at least a pretty average PNM. but now since rush has become so much more competitive and that there are outstanding PNMs around every corner, a sorority would rather pledge an overall excellent PNM that isn't a legacy rather than an average PNM that is a legacy. being a legacy here nowadays is only an extra add on, kind of like another extracurricular club or some volunteer work you participated in during high school.

What you CAN count on if you are a legacy:
You will not fall through the cracks or be overlooked, which unfortunately can happen a lot because so many girls go through rush and there are many who are outstanding. If you are dropped from your legacy house, you know it is because they genuinely didn't see you as a good fit, NOT because you got overlooked because legacies will definitely be reviewed thoroughly.

What you CANT count on if you're a legacy: an automatic invitation back (different houses have different policies), or a guaranteed bid.

^ This. Legacy status ensures your rec will be thoroughly reviewed, that the girls you meet at the party will know you are a legacy, and your fit will be assessed as quickly as possible. Everyone recognized legacies have a deep connection to the house, so in many cases, if a house believes a legacy will not receive a bid, they cut as soon as possible, to give the legacy more time/opportunities to build a relationship with a different house.

PNM'S, before you call yourself a legacy, you might want to check to make sure you really are one first. Every national sorority has a different definition of legacy. Your grandma might not actually give you legacy status, and your cousin definitely doesn't. Get it straight now and check with the national sorority to get the real DL. Some nationals have a form for your legacy connection to send in as an introduction to the chapter, beyond whatever recs you get from others, and nationals can help you understand what to expect in the process as well.

If you are a legacy, be sure to list it on your registration. Only your legacy sorority will see that info. Don't assume sororities know which legacies are coming through. Unless you mark it on registration, or someone sends in a sponsor form stating that, they don't automatically know.

Thanks Aunt Gin. I was told not to list it on registration because all the other sororities will see where you are a legacy and then might drop you because they assume you will pledge at your legacy house?

Most of them keep it in consideration unless they have too many of them
