bama vs ole miss
by: Pnm
Hi guys, I am from the north and I am really in love with these two schools! I have visited both and cannot for the life of me choose which one I like more.
I am very interested in rushing sororities, but I have no connections at either school. I do have at least two recs per house at each school, though. Cost is not important and AP credit is the same.
I think I'm leaning towards Ole Miss but I am just worried that there are less OOS and northerners there. I know Bama has a lot more and sororities seem slightly more open to us here than Ole Miss.
Help!

Your impression is correct.
Ole Miss sororities are WAY more difficult to get into, partly because there are fewer sororities at Ole Miss.
Those sororities also perfer recs from their own chapter alumnae. Most Alabama chapters are OK with recs from alumnae of any of their chapters.
Remember that Tuscaloosa is a bigger town and close to Birmingham, which has much better shopping options than Oxford or even Memphis.

I was in the same boat as you. As a northerner coming into it, Ole Miss seems very traditional and the charm of Oxford lures you in. As you grow older in college however, you long for a university with a little more diversity in it as your tastes and opinions change. Alabama can provide you with a traditional southern experience, but it won't drown you in it. There are more people from the north and out west here, the regional diversity is actually pretty wild. As much as you want to surround yourself with southern culture, there are still lots of things you'll miss about the north and having others from the same area as you will make it a lot easier and you will enjoy yourself more. Bama is a little more cosmopolitain in comparison to Ole Miss, and that is something you'll probably want as you get older. Plus our Greek system is huge and a lot more inclusive than Ole Miss. I am almost positive there are kids from all 50 states in our greek system. That is a cooler experience is you ask me. In conclusion if your a northerner, hands down come to Bama- You'll have better alumni connections after college if you decide to move back home, not to mention Bama is much better in academics.

No thanks. I like the southern weather and want to attend a traditional southern university.
