There's no set rule. It depends on a lot of factors, like if you've had fall semester contact with certain houses, where your friends are going, etc. Personally, I only somewhat seriously rushed like 3 houses, but that's because I already kinda knew where I wanted to go and had had a good deal of fall semester contact with them.
I'd say more than like 8 or 9 houses before first contacts would be hard to manage. Also, it's certainly not out of the ordinary to go to a house for the first time between first and second contacts, depending on how first contacts go for you.
