what's life like in a "bottom tier" sorority?

by:

I plan on rushing in the spring and to be honest, I'm just very average looking and pretty shy so I won't be surprised if I end up in one of those so-called "bottom tier" sororities. I'm most interested in the sisterhood so the rankings don't really matter to me.

That said, are the bottom tier sororities not as involved on campus? Do they mix with frats?

All sororities do the same things. They all have mixers (usually 2-3 times a week), they all do philanthropy events, have formals and date nights, are involved on campus, etc. The tier system only matters when it comes to who you mix with, and even that fluctuates a lot. Generally, the "bottom tier" mixes with the lower and middle tier frats, but occasionally mixers with upper and top tier can occur as well. And fit is not as cut and dry as you'd think. There are definitely average and shy girls in the upper tier houses, and beautiful and outgoing girls in the bottom tier.

Speaking as a member of a bottom tier sorority myself, I can tell you with 100% honesty that I have not missed or wished I was in a different position once. We have a decent schedule and usually mix 3 nights of the week -- not with the top tier frats, but I promise you there are still great guys (and good looking ones too) in every fraternity. I love my sisters to death and there is absolutely no cattiness in our house, unlike many of the top sororities. Anyone who looks down on you because of your tier is not worth it. Honestly, you won't regret it if you do it for the right reasons.

Thank you! Any tips on surviving recruitment since I'm shy? I'm working to overcome my shyness and have already joined a couple of clubs but sometimes I come across as disinterested when I don't mean to at all.

I also hate small talk and I know recruitment is all about small talk.

Its not at all about small talk! Recruitment is about standing out, so talking about the weather or what show you like on netflix is not the way to do it. Whatever comes to mind, just go with it! It shows that you have a personality and the girls will get to know the real you. Relax and have fun with it, it's really not as scary as it seems
