my biggest advice is to not talk to all the brothers: only talk to 3 maximum brothers in a fraternity (anymore and they’ll think you’re desperate).

Best of luck out there freshman it’s a wild journey.

What kind of advice is this lol...some frats need up to 80% of the brothers to vote to give you a bid. Best advice is just hit up different annexes with your friends during O-Week & just be normal and cool and if you vibe with an upperclassman somewhere or some kid gives you his contact and they invite you to brotherhood events then great. Don’t be super weird about any of the stuff and don’t seem overexcited. Also talk to as many brothers as you can to get a feel for a house but don’t force anything.

I’m a rising sophomore so here’s my advice.

1. You have a year before rush so don’t get yourself anxious for no reason, however strive to make genuine, casual, connections now.

2. During o-week go out and have fun. Literally go to a new house every night just for fun. Meet as many people as possible, it’s overwhelming but really fun.

3. Try to get brothers’ contacts but don’t be too giddy or look desperate. They won’t reject you 9 times out of 10. Besides u have nothing to lose.

4. Best way to get to know a brother is no through boring small talk (I.e talking about your major, school). Unless you Went to the same school or have a really interesting connection of some sort. Be casual and cool. The best way to start knowing a brother is to play ‘pong’. This is fun for both parties and if you’re good or u beat them or ur fun to play with, meaning u follow all the little house rules, they’ll think ur cool and like u. If you suck, then they obviously won’t like u or have fun. After the game, offer to play next time and get their contact, the part ways. Send em a text reminding them who u r the next day and telling them to hit u up if there’s another party.

5. Meet as many people as possible. Houses have like 70-100 brothers, the more u know the better.

6. Also, try to get a sense of the clubs brothers are part of. After o-week, this is a great way to stay connected. You’ve met them socially, now get to know them in a professional setting. But, don’t be stupid and like stalk a brother or join a club just because they r. That’s just creepy.

7. Stay relatively in touch. There will be parties throughout the semester and dirty rush events, stay in touch to attend these.

8. This is rarely mentioned but enjoy your time at Cornell, especially your first semester. Make genuine friends among your peers, and maybe find a friend group to rush with. It’s so much more fun when you already have a close friend group to go to different houses with and if u know the same brothers—brothers will notice this. Stay on top of your academics, this is important. Ya we party a lot but we’re also grinding and are on top of our stuff. Don’t let “rushing” take up ur time, try new things in Ithaca. Take care of your mental health.

9. Stay off this site as much as possible. Forget the rankings, don’t try to rush a house only for its ranking—everyone will tell u how stupid of an idea that is. Don’t put on a fake persona, brothers will see right through it!!!! ALWAYS BE YOURSELF! That is the most important thing, if you’re not yourself then you’ll just mess everything up for yourself in the end. Trust the process and just be yourself.

10.) I’m not sure what else to add. 10 seems like a good number to stop at. Oh ya, also make lots of lady friends—they really help when trying to get in for a good ratio. Lastly, stay safe! That’s all I have to say, you’ll be good regardless.
