colleges as the great houses of westeros
by: Archmaester Marwyn
Hello my fellow denizens of the Westeros, potential paramours of knowledge, and watchers on the wall that keep us some from the undead wights of Ithaca college and the deadly agenda of the great other who seeks the long night to end us all (Martha Pollack). Armed with nothing more than a quill and the great knowledge of many an archgrandmaester before me, I have come to bring to you the colleges as the Houses of Westeros.
Arts and Sciences - The Starks of Winterfell. As the oldest college on this campus, one of the proudest and most prominent, it is only fitting that A&S be described as the Starks of Winterfell. Much like castle of Winterfell itself the arts quad is ancient and proud, armed with great stone buildings in which many a student has learned a craft. A deep sense of honor that parallels key tenets of a true liberal arts education.
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences - The Baratheons of Storms End. A strong ally to the Starks and another ancient and proud house, CALS students control the stormlands, with their great fortress of Mann Library closely resembling the ancestral home house Baratheon, Storms End. A very influential house that commands many different actors across campus that pursue their own agendas, sometimes at the expense of their peers.
Engineering - The Greyjoys of Pyke. Not much to say here. Pyke is a super depressing place, and so are engineers. Gloomy quad, a fair share of bitterness on reddit, and keep mostly to themselves.
School of Hotel Administration - The Lannisters of Casterly Rock. Only in the hotel school does such unbridled greed and ambition run rampant and unchecked. Destined for glory and with the full strength of hotelie alumni pulling strings from within the industry, the hotel school is full of Cerseis, Jaime's and Tyrions with as much drama as the three siblings offer up in the text.
Applied Economics and Management - The Tyrells of Highgarden. Making an exception here since they are technically part of CALS but this one just fits. The rich get richer. Think AEM and Hotel are somewhat interchangeable with Tyrell and Lannister so this interpretation is a bit up to y'all.
College of Veterinary Medicine - The Arryns of the Vale. With that big building of theirs all the way up who knows where, and with Veterinary Medicine kids never really making a splash on the rest of campus, this is another one that really feels like it just fits. Plus, the Veterinary building is tall and imposing, kinda like the vail.
College of Industrial and Labor Relations - The Tullys of Riverrun. This is another one that really seems to just go without explanation. Lord Hoster Tully was wise and ruled the riverlands well, they've got Brynden the Blackfish for the ILR kids with a bit more of a pulse, and Edmure and Catelyn were both characters that acted honorably. This really fits my perception of ILR kids that I've encountered at this school.
Applied Architecture and Planning - House Martell of Dorne. Much like in ASOIAF the Dornish are often an odd people, more Rhoynish than Andal and yet they command influence from their isolation, and demand respect because of the acclaim and success of their reign. Anyone getting through AAP here is sure to be Unbowed, Unbent, and Unbroken to have the fortitude to survive such a rigorous program.
Bonus points to anyone that would like to breakdown specific majors in the lower lordlings of each of these great houses.\n\n\n\n\n
