money in greeklife
by: WtfA lot of posts on here talk about how some frats and sororities are “wealthy” and that top frats and sororities want wealthy, rich kids. I even saw some posts that talked about how guys apparently only want girls in top sororities because they are rich. Please stop with this. If you care about how much money someone has, you need to re-evaluate. It’s really pathetic.

There are a lot of people here who flaunt their family money like they themselves earned it. Those people are shallow, classless, and materialistic. But, there are also a lot of really genuine people in Greek life too. Just avoid the houses (frats and sororitys) that value the wealth of your family over who you are as a person. Those houses are easy to pick out.

As a current pnm rushing tomorrow, this makes me sad and scared. I come from a pretty comfortable background (cant imagine how low income rushees might feel) and everyone since nov has been pressuring me to get designer wear for rush (gucci belt, goose, etc) because they say it matters much more than the actual conversation. At the same time i will admit selfishly i do want to get into a “relevant” house....why are places where money matters most so valued and the genuine ones so undervalued? It makes me so goddamn sad because I have all of this in the front of my mind but yet i still buy things to show off my wealth and I feel like a complete hipocrite.

These comments are disgusting. The OP is right in that people should NOT care about money during this process. However people in Greek life unfortunately do care. It’s sad and pathetic but it’s the truth. But that doesn’t go for everyone, and there are definitely some houses and certain individuals in every house who don’t take money into account. The people above commenting that “money will always be attractive babe” need to re-evaluate themselves

Some houses do care about money unfortunately. But many houses don’t care, and even some “top” houses don’t seem to care much, like theta or even aphi. Even if aphi seems to focus more on looks, they don’t seem to care much about money. You will find a place and if you are rushing a house where you feel pressure about money, don’t join. It’s not for you.

In a strat and i totally disagree. Whats the meaning of “fraternity for everyone” then? Comment #3 of scared pnm seems accurate— if you’re of lower socioeconomic status you may not land core four but you can still most definitely find elsewhere you can have a worthwhile time. It’s a matter to your own discretion of if you care all that much about how you are precieved and the sacrafices you’re willing to make
