what are frats looking for
by: rusheespring2k19Hi, I am planning on rushing and I was curious as to what in general is the vibe like at smokers. Like what do rushees talk to the brothers about and things like that and whats the overall vibe and numbers of people like at a mid tier frat open house. Thanks in advance for any advice or input

Just rush man. There’s honestly no right answer to this question. Every house has a slightly different vibe and will be looking for different traits in rushes. In general, be sociable and willing to talk/interact with a wide variety of people in a wide variety of settings. Show you’re genuinely interested in each chapter and really spend time getting to know brothers (especially seniors) because they are going to be meeting so many kids they will have a hard time keeping them all straight. I’ve been in the room before when the frat liked someone, but thought they didn’t spend enough time at smokers so they were passed over. Be able to relate to people, know something about popular subjects for small talk like sports, the Greek system, etc. just be yourself and spend enough time with a couple houses you really could see yourself at and you will be fine. It’s also important to keep a frats disciplinary history in mind, as you don’t want to join a frat only to have it kicked off the next month.

great advice, having meaningful conversations at smokers is tough so if it feels a little awkward don't worry. Just be yourself and talk to as many kids as possible. You should get the hang of it after the first day.
