how to invest (learn something today actually)

When investing the rule is to take your age and subtract it from 100. Your age= the % you should be investing in bonds, the remainder is the % you should be investing in stocks.
I recommend a mutual fund that has a low barrier to entry (try out fidelity investments, for example). if not, perhaps check out an ETF.
