how many people are rushing a house?

by: su

How many people will be rushing a fraternity house this January? I know it'll vary due to popularity, but how much does it vary? It also probably drops off after the first day right?

About 800 people show up for rush, so the top 20 houses or so are packed during the first couple days. After first contacts though, people limit their rushing to only a few frats and the competition isn't as crazy

What are contacts? And how many would you expect at a good house in like the second day?

On the second day, frats contact kids that they like and invite them to closed events that night. People generally get a few contacts and hangout and at these houses until second contacts, at which point they hangout out at only 1 or 2 houses until bid day. The first couple days before first contacts are extremely packed. Many of the upper houses will have upward of 100 rushes inside at a time, so you have to take a lot of initiative as a rush to meet and talk to brothers at smokers.

How hard is it getting a contact then? Is it just based on how many brothers you talk to?

Not that hard. Frats give first contacts to guys that don't suck, have had decent conversations with a bunch of the brothers, and seem to vibe with the brotherhood. Second contacts are much stricter though, much of which are based off the rushes interactions during closed events. Surviving second contacts means that the frat is seriously considering giving you a bid, granted that you keep showing up to closed events and don't prove to be an absolute fraud.

What is the difference between 1st and 2nd contacts then? Like if first is how just a normal convo is second just testing out your vibe?

No difference other than that frats hand out more first contacts than second contacts. First contacts are for guys who they want to give a chance, and second contacts are for the serious candidates after they've gauged who's interested. A frat might hand out 100+ first contacts, but only 30 second contacts if they're looking for a 20 person pledge class.

Ok so contacts are different from invite only events right? What are the invite only events then? Are they still just parties or do the brothers actually do somehting?
