ama - active panhellenic sister

by:

Hi! I am an active sister of one of our 13 sororities and I'd love to help answer any questions you have about recruitment. I'll answer any serious questions about the process, tips, and culture surrounding Panhellenic, but won't say what house I'm in. Ask away and best of luck to everyone!

Nope, that's just a rumor. Nobody is on probation as far as I know.

What types of conversation happen the first 2 days?

Generally the conversations are fairly light (think food in Ithaca, majors, etc). Steer away from talk of politics, significant others, fraternities, and booze. Think the type of conversation you'd have at a brunch with someone you don't know very well.

Any tips?

As corny as it sounds, be yourself and go in with an open mind. As someone who has gone through the process as a PNM, recruitment counselor, and active sister, it's amazing what trivial things can get someone cut from a house. Just because you are not invited back to XYZ has NO correlation with how interesting or worthy a person you are, so take the whole week with a grain of salt. I have friends who honestly counted on dropping out of the house they received bids to, and as seniors are still affiliated and love it. Being greek at Cornell in ANY house is wonderful, and by the time you finish sophomore year nobody really cares what house you're in anymore but rather that you're part of our community as a whole.

advice for rushing frats?

By: e
by: PHC

Same as sororities, this is a group of people you will spend a lot of time with over the next few years--go based off who you click with rather than prestige or ranking. Frats are nice as they will tend to be much more up front with you about whether or not they could actually see you getting a bid, so there's a lot less cattiness/backhanded flattery/etc.

Do the girls really judge you by what kind of jacket you have?

By: Anon
by: PHC

They really shouldn't. Don't wear a fracket to recruitment (put a little effort in) but it's FINE if it isn't a Canada goose or anything ridiculous. I did fine during recruitment at houses that are rumored to judge based on jackets with an off brand black jacket. Don't make a big deal out of it and neither will the sisters.
