sorority insight
by: PNM
Freshman girls are for the most part left in the dark as to what different sororities and Greek life at large is actually like. The rankings on this site are pretty meaningless, especially without an understanding of what a "good" sorority constitutes. Plus, based on social media and individual sites, every sorority is comprised of nice, pretty girls who care about philanthropy and like to have fun.
Could anyone please give leave some insight as to what Greek life is actually like for girls? What are the different sororities actually like? What does the right "fit" even mean? Are girls fake, or do girls actually find their best friends through the process?
Thanks

The rankings on this site are absolute BS - glad you can see through that. Half are trolls while other comments are literally made by salty people in certain houses bringing down other houses or self-ranking themselves lmao.
I'm an artist and love being a creative, and I did not think that I would like Greek life at all. I rushed hoping to meet new people and expand my network, and went into it with an open mind. I am so glad that I did.
I met some of my best friends from my house and would NEVER have met them otherwise. You'll meet people from all colleges, majors, interests, etc. and it's awesome. Cornell is huge and being involved in Greek life truly makes it feel like a smaller community, which was wonderful for me.
You need to figure out what you are looking for in a sorority before rush - are you looking for a tight sisterhood and close friendships? If so, you should probably look into KD, AXO, Pi Phi, Theta. Are you looking for a house that tends to be a bit more cliquey/one where you can sort of form your own clique? Maybe Kappa, APhi, SDT. (These are just simple examples and things I've heard about these chapters on our campus).
One thing that a lot of PNMs get wrong when going into rush is the social scene. "Omg, I need to rush DG because we will have the best social schedule!" Lol. Every single sorority on campus mixes with frats - since there are fewer sororities than fraternities on campus, a single frat can tend to mix with anywhere from 5-7 sororities. Some

frats on campus are even getting sick of the few sororities that they mix with, ex. Sig Chi generally mixes with only "Core 4" houses yet has had several mixers with Kappa Delta this semester. Chi Phi mixes with usually SDT/Pi Phi/occasionally AEPhi as does Sig Nu, yet they have both mixed with KD and AXO (middle) as well. Don't go for a social scene - while your house will have certain frats with that they mix with more often, let's be real, if you really wanted to go to a certain house on the weekend, you likely could go anyway.
Look for the meaningful conversations during rush. Take notes after going to each house on phone, like, "____ and I talked about a certain class, it was hilarious" or "didn't vibe that well with girl i talked to in ____ house." That will help you remember pros and cons at the end of long days.
Look for the girls that you would not just party with, but would go to Nasties at 3am with after a long night. For the girls who will be shoulders to cry on and companions to celebrate with after huge achievements at Cornell. For legitimate awesome friends who you'll share so many laughs with and special times with.
Trust me, you'll figure it out! Best of luck <3
