I write to you from one of the aforementioned houses. It is indeed possible to get a bid without fall interaction. It is tougher, but there are kids here who found themselves in exactly your position before and now are in the house. During Rush, the most important thing to do is to meet as many people as possible. Go to smokers and any events your invited to (if you haven't been fall rushing then your first invite may take time) and have positive conversations with someone. Then, mentally check them off and find someone else. Do establish your "home base" of people you can always talk to but remember that for most houses it comes down to a vote.

Definitely insure yourself though, look at all the houses, not just top ones. Besides, as fun as it is, it does have drawbacks and unintended stressors and I have friends in "lower" houses that love it.
