how does spring rush work?

OK so I know this is way early but I'm dying to be in a sorority!
Can someone please explain to me spring rush?
How do you know which sororities are doing it?
Why do they do it in the first place?
How do I let them know I'm interested?
How will they choose who they want?
Is it looked down on to join in spring?
