question from a dutch girl
by: DutchieIs it allowed to join a sorority if you are at USC for only 6-8 months? Because of being abroad for school?

Ja, natuurlijk! But please note first of all that I am not (no longer) a student and therefore might have a view than someone who is currently studying on a US college campus. I am rather an alumna and also an advisor to a chapter of my sorority, which I joined many years ago when I was a student. This means that, while I am quite aware of what is happening with the members of the chapter I advise, my view is from a different perspective. (Yes, I really am an “Oma” - that’s “Grandma” to you English speakers! :D).
Your status as a visiting student would not automatically disqualify you at the university where I am an advisor, but there may be a different policy at USC. usually, various groups will decide if they will issue you a bid/invitation to become a member. However, they have only a limited number of bids they may give out and they usually want members who will be able to contribute to and benefit from being part of the sisterhood for their entire time at the university. This, however, varies from school to school. At the chapter I advise, your short-term status would not matter.
The best advice I can give you is to sign up for recruitment and see what happens. It’s a good way to meet people when you’re a “stranger in a strange land”! There are some groups that are more “popular” than others or where everyone seems to be a fabulous student or athlete or even a party-girl. (I strongly suggest avoiding the latter!) In any event, just be yourself and you will find a group you like. You will also make some friends for life!
(By the way, I’m not Dutch, but my husband is and was a member of a fraternity at his university. However, he was an immigrant, not a visiting student.)

Super!
I am still quite confused by how sororities work in the US, it is totally different than in the Netherlands. For example, I don't think that there is an 'ontgroening'(hazing?)in the US right? But this helps me a lot.
Dank je wel! (Thanks)
