Do Rec letters really matter during sorority rush?

Recs do help. It won’t get you in a particular sorority but it may keep you from getting cut in the first and second rounds which allows you more time to make an impression.

My aunt is ridiculously involved in all-things Southern sorority (she's on some kind of alumnus board) and she says that certain sororities are very unlikely to take you if you don't have a rec (especially ZTA), but definitely if it comes down to you vs. another girl, they're going to choose the girl with a rec

Certain sororities, including ZTA, require a rec for every girl they pledge. It's a national requirement.

Yes. You want to get at least 1 to 2 per house. That and grades are the easiest and first cut. Ask your family friends, school teachers, people in church or synagogue, etc. neighbors... Start asking. I bet you know many more sorority women than you think. But I am telling you the truth about letters. Good luck and go get 'em.
