how undergrounds work

by:

upenn has a thriving "underground" (off campus) greek scene, one that coexists with their panhel/IFC chapters. granted, theyve been around for decades and the school sometimes tries to do something about it, but its too established. most recent off campus was founded about four years ago (OAX) and is doing great, even does philanthropy. obviously with lehighs admin it will be harder, but im sure we could take a page or two from their book.

I could see this happening in like 3 or 4 years. Right now the schools really against sororities partying with underground frats. If a few more frats and sororitys get booted maybe. I honestly think the school will chill out a bit after what happened last year. I only think fraternities will get in real trouble for hospitalizing people

id be down going underground. What are the dumb frosh going to say to the cops if they get caught? They can't rat out a legit house so there is no one to really put any blame on. When you've removed yourself from ties to the uni i think you become more free to do what you want. Just get with some friends and rent some east 5th houses. You can serve whatever drinks, let whoever you want in but hopefully keep it small (only invite the hot girls from theta/agam/zeta for example), and check phones at the door with some kind of valet system (whoever is at the door can keep a sticky note with the owner's name on it). That way you have parties that are more like what you'd want, keep randos out, no one posts something potentially harmful on social media while at the party, and therefore less likely to get in trouble.

on the flip side you dont get a lot of the benefits like
-being able to put it on your resume
-in the early years there will be ZERO alumni connections (career building interests)
-fees and dues become that much harder and more complicated
-philanthropy is harder, cant participate in larger events like relay for life

1/2. No one is going to hire you because you were in their frat. It's basically at best a conversation starter.

3. Make a simple rule - no access to parties until you pay dues. Or, have a cover charge for people. 10$ per guy, 5$ per girl. Pretty easy.

4. Ok, that's the schools problem. If they drive the frats off, they have to live with the consequences.
