must i sacrifice my independence in greek life?

by:

I will be starting school in the fall and I am thinking of joining Greek Life. I come from a large family that has always allowed me to be fairly independent with my decisions. However, my parents and a few of my older siblings, have expressed their disapproval of joining a Greek organization. They are mostly concerned about the alcohol abuse and hazing issues that have proven deadly to some young pledges over the past years across the country. They also told me that my own independence and individuality will be constrained within the unit of the Greek chapter that I join.$9

I'm just looking for some open and honest responses from current and former Greeks so I can make a good decision for myself. I desperately want to keep my individualism and independence.

all the Greek houses are open to any and all suggestions but offering bribes or gifts of pleasure will surely help your cause (if you know what I mean).

just send us a snapshot of your face and we'll decide from there if you're worthy of becoming a Greek.

Greek life is a much more open and welcoming environment than is portrayed on the news or media. Atleast much more than previous years. The behavior you associated with it is obsolete and frats have genuinely evolved and moved forward. No frat wants to be the next Beta Sig at Penn State. Give Greek a chance, make your own opinion, there’s a reason such a large percentage of Lehigh’s go Greek.

You don't rush until 2nd semester so you have several months to meet the brothers and visit houses and off campus parties. Give it a chance and see for yourself.

Many families are mixed Greek and some kids come to Lehigh really expecting to be pro or con Greek and change based on what they find.

Making your own decision based on what you learn, hear, and experience is a major sign of growing up/ independence.

Congrats on coming to Lehigh!
