why do you want to join the greek culture
by: ice
Joining a Greek Life sounds so great when you are being sold on the idea Your lifestyle will be inclusive, fair and equitable with a bit of philanthropy mixed in....sounds so wonderful when in reality it is much like joining a gang in the streets of LA....Reasons someone joins a gang are so eerily similar to joining Greek Life on LU campus:
Identity or Recognition - Being part of a gang allows the gang member to achieve a level of status he/she feels impossible outside the gang culture.
Protection - many members join because they live in the gang area and are, therefore, subject to violence by rival gangs. Joining guarantees support in case of attack and retaliation for transgressions.
Fellowship and Brotherhood - To the majority of gang members, the gang functions as an extension of the family and may provide companionship lacking in the gang member’s home environment. Many older brothers and relatives belong, or have belonged to the gang.
Intimidation - Some members are forced to join if their membership will contribute to the gang’s criminal activity. Some join to intimidate others in the community not involved in gang activity.
Criminal Activity - Some join a gang to engage in petty crimes others while others participate in other illegal activity and benefit from the group’s profits and protection.

If you don’t want to be a part of it, don’t join it. People in Greek life aren’t on here shaming you for pursuing your interests, but here you are shaming them.
I get that a few years back, a kid at penn state died, and it is really tragic, but just because that happened at one school does not mean the situation reflects all other Greek life students. The ample amount of times students have been sent to the hospital because another friend is concerned are never discussed, it is only the times that people react negatively.
The problem with the whole world today is that people constantly feel the need to be put in little boxes. Saying you can’t be in Greek life but also be a rational person with strong morals is only playing into the ideal that we must confine ourselves to specific stereotypes. Unless you know every single person in Greek life at this school (which I know you don’t) then don’t label them as gangs in LA

The Greek organization(s) are Mostly all mild forms of brainwashing. They prey on your individual insecurities - how will you ever find that "tight" knit group without them....You will need them to provide networking opportunities when you graduate. Actually they are basically all about protecting their own chapter(s) than the individual members within the group.

Maybe Lehigh is not the right school for you OP ? Did you do one minute of research about Lehigh before enrolling? I mean, it is NO secret that Lehigh has a big Greek system, and a bigger history. And the party rankings alone might have been a clue.....?
