it's pretty much over

by:

It's blatenly obvious this school is hell bent on destroying its culture and work hard play hard mentality that kept so many of us sane throughout the years. Lehigh is just another run of the mill top 50 academic school without its flourishing Greek and social life that prospects see as a deciding factor to come to this school. If this current administration sticks to this zero party tolerance rule it'll have dire consequences on the student body and will affect all those looking to come to lehigh, those at lehigh and graduates. Parties pushed us to get work done so we could relive all the stress of college but now there is nothing to look forward to. If it continues there are only dark days ahead for Lehigh.

To get past this smackdown, we need to find a win-win.

We need to have a few bros stay sober to make sure the drinking is kept to a safe level, the party stays inside the house, and anyone who passes out or gets injured is handled properly. If we do that, I don't think anyone will bother us.

All fraternity parties back on the hill with some sober bros make sense. If admin can't work that out with police asap then students need to go further office campus to party in smaller groups - staying overnight.

Don't know if the admin and rents will like that but there are only so many alternatives to being locked out of your own campus and the surrounding neighborhoods.

If the admin wants to support something political for all students how about dropping the drinking age back to 18...or even lower to 16?

Since PA had a drinking age, only started after prohibition, the age in state has always been 21. Wrong and stupid restriction and out of line with the rest of the world which is 16 to 18. Current drinking age rules have contributed to a poor relationship with alcohol by many Americans.

It won't end with Ed Shupp's retirement which is in the works for a year or so from now - his replacement is the former head of Bethlehem PD (same track as Ed Shupp) and is currently working on LU PD. It only reduces it you end having a police force and utilize campus security. I doubt that will happen. LU PD existed before the Clery murder. Board of Trustees want protection of a PD. PD Chief wants to enforce laws to reduce liability. The goal is to neuter fraternities. That means students need to become more clever but stay safe. Secret societies, smaller groups, parties further from campus, and occasional road trips.

I just checked with Charter Empire, $1,750 for a 24hr bus rental to and from Montreal (less than $40 per person). Leave Sat 3PM, return Sun 3PM. Drinking age 18. Lots of great clubs including after hours clubs until the bus would leave. All clubs can be ticketed in advance with great DJs so no missed events. Also lower key pubs and lots of concerts and games if people don't want big clubs. Get your passport lets go to Montreal or Ontario (drinking age 19 and really great clubs as well, and a little closer). Ladies drink free at most places so ladies cost would be about $80 to $100 including transportation, admittance, and food, for men's all + drinks likely $150 to $200. Safe and legal.

You want people to spend $200+/weekend to party? 90% of people in college can't afford that.

I think it is more than likely Lehigh pushing their liberal agenda than concerned about the well being of the students. Possibly both.

The degree of risk that national fraternities and sororities are exposed to has become far too costly to reasonably mitigate. That's why dues keep going up, more chapters are going dry, and pledge periods are shrinking down to the point of nonexistence.

This trend will continue until Greeks can demonstrate and sustain reasonable social behavior. It's not about ruining your fun, it's about economics. Sad but true.

Liberals may go along with the crackdown because they are concerned about recent student deaths. However, they prefer to focus on safety. They are likely to say, let students drink, if it's done safely. Conservatives are more authoritarian and rule focused. They think everyone needs to follow those rules. If you are not 21, you don't drink, it is against the rules. Period. If you drink, you should go to jail.

That means our only chance of working out a compromise where, if we can drink safely, we will be left alone, rests with liberals. Conservatives will only agree if the law is changed, and that is not going to happen. \n\n\n\n\n

Not all conservatives and liberals are the same, some conservatives might be pro or anti partying for various reasons, same thing with liberals. Arguing over which side we want to blame is stupid and counterproductive, greeks of whatever political background all want the same thing right now, we have to unite and work together to get through this.

if you think that the police are bad now, just wait until spring pledging starts. willing to bet there will be house walk-throughs almost every night.
