Let's face it - rush & sorority membership just isn't the same as it was when I went through years ago.I keep wishing that it could be the same for my daughters and other special girls I know. The often demeaning, exhausting process for nervous freshman girls, the costs involved which often give you only 1 yr in the house(I had 3 and that was my favorite part of sorority life and the BEST way to make true bonds with your sisters by living with them as a family)Now we have huge pledge classes that end up in cliques.I've been writing recs for yrs sending them to UGA. They end up pledging girls who depledge - would love to know the % who depledge/deactivate. That was practically unheard of back in the 80's. The whole process needs a major overhaul - it's archaic. If things don't get better, I'm afraid many girls will forego rush and alum support will diminish. Good luck, panhellenc, I think you're heading for a bumpy ride!

I am an Alum who pledged a sorority at UGA my freshman year over 20 years ago. Unlike some of these alums, I am just as proud to be affiliated with my sorority today as the day I received my bid. I think we have a huge national alum base and loads of loyalty. I think that their are sororities out there that still understand the meaning of sisterhood. I am glad I am not part of an organization like the ones quoted in some of the below comments! Good luck everyone. And to my sorority, I wish you extra special luck ;)

Loyalty is precisely the reason for the concerns being expressed here. The truths being stated aren't all from alums making demands in their self interest. Yes some are upset and need to vent, but there are some truths that could be dealt with constructively. In fact, if you understand the meaning of sisterhood, you will be concerned that recruitment is becoming a meat market. I want more for my legacy than to feel she has to shop her body + GPA around. I hope she finds a good fit, if not its easy to conclude that at this university, Greek life does not fit with our family values, which are more important than sisterhood.

I think they need to go back to the way they used to do things at UGA. I did not get my bid in a huge room. It was delivered to my room where I was staying. It seemed a little more personal and heartfelt than today's way. Also bid was less chaotic. Don't get me started on Greek Grind, it is terrible. It is almost a compliment not to win that contest. Ick!

Maybe it is just my particular sorority but I am not experiencing this with my sorority. I still feel like they have a great sisterhood and are very well respected by all at UGA. It makes me more and more thankful that I am a part of a true sisterhood. I love my sorority and have been an alum for a LONG time.

I was born in the South and have lived in ATL for 33 yrs. I am active in my alum group which is great & have written recs for yrs. Now my daughter is at UGA and this is our first time experience up close & personal. I just found out about the meat market bid day and how the girls are herded into 1 room to get their bids at one time with no respect for their feelings! Now I see the Greek Grind on You Tube - awful! If my daughter pledges I will be watching carefully - if the women aren't good, she will depledge! I am going to contact Panhel and suggest major changes. Parents and alums - I urge you to speak out to panhel and your individual sororities. Legacy system isn't working. Every year there are more and more and there are only so many spots. System needs to be reworked in a major way!

You will only be in that room if you get a bid. If a girl is not offered a bid, she will be contacted privately in the morning. She will not be in that room unless she has an invite and I did not see one picture last year of a girl crying. They are all happy to be there.

To defend the girls....seriously go to Greekchat to have a mature conversation. There is a thread about Legacies.
