Sorority legacy

by:

How much consideration is given to sorority legacies during recruitment. They used to have take legacies but have been told that's no longer the case.

No consideration at all for almost all of them.

It's not quite right to say that sororities "used to have to take legacies", but there were special required courtesies that chapters had to stick to. In general, legacies used to have to receive a courtesy invitation to the first invited round and if they made it to pref they were automatically at the top of the bid list. And some sorority chapters had to notify the legacy relative when they released a legacy.

But there are so many legacies these days, and chapters being forced to make cuts of girls they liked just to accommodate legacies was not in keeping with their right to choose their own membership. So a bunch of nationals decided to remove their legacy courtesy requirements a few years ago.

The new way is much better for all concerned. Chapters can choose who they feel is best for them, pnm's aren't subject to as much family pressure, and great girls with no legacy aren't at a disadvantage.

You need to check the national policy of the sorority in question to see where they stand on this, and also verify who they consider to be a legacy because every sorority has their own definition. If you are a legacy to a particular chapter where you are rushing it could get you noticed, so no harm in letting that chapter know.

No, most do not.

It doesn't matter what "most" do or don't do, it only matters what someone's actual legacy house does.

From what I can tell legacies really only have an advantage if their relative gets in contact with current members and uses connections. Legacy isn’t a huge factor at all but most legacies have connections within the sorority which helps a ton.

That's not true. "Connections" means chapter members knowing a pnm personally or knowing about her from close acquaintances, like high school or camp or friends of friends, not some random alum from wherever calling the chapter. If you didn't go here for college or you don't personally know members, you have no connections. A chapter legacy might get some consideration but that never gets anyone a bid.

The official answer for most is “none” since many sororities have updated their national policies to stop giving preferential treatment to legacies due to pressures to increase DEI efforts.

However, there is still a decent amount of unofficial prioritization of legacies - it’s just less predictable/more driven by alumni involvement. This is especially true of the “old row” sororities.

For example, a PNM whose mother was a legacy of chapter XYZ, but had zero involvement/communication with the sorority since she first became an alum would probably not receive any special treatment during recruitment, but a PNM whose mother is a chapter advisor, the event coordinator for the local alumni chapter, or a significant donor to the sorority is probably going to be offered a bid.
