What is a snap bid and how does someone get a bid before bid day?

By: pnm

from another thread...
Snap bids can only be extended if a house does not make quota. Quota is roughly the number of PNM’s invited to 1+ Pref party divided by the number of houses on campus. To explain it simply, if quota is 100 and a sorority only gets 98 new members during bid matching, then they can “snap” up 2 more new members to reach quota.

Snap bids can ONLY go out between bid matching & bid opening. Once bids are open & bid day starts, it’s too late to snap.

They are not announced publicly, not even to a chapter's general membership. A chapter's recruitment chair and a few other people make the decisions on who to snap and don't share the information. Panhellenic also knows but they don't announce it either. The only way to know is if you know someone personally who was dropped and then gets a bid. The pnm shows up to bid day with everyone else.

PNM’s should not consider snap bids a rush strategy. This works out for very few girls. It is not something to count on! Your best chance of going Greek is always the chapters still inviting you back.

If you really want to learn about RFM, snaps, quota additions, and continuous open bidding then I suggest you check out greekchat. The sorority recruitment subthread has great explanations of the process.

To be eligible for a snap bid, a pnm has to have either dropped out of recruitment, been dropped by all houses, or not matched for a bid after pref for only putting one of her two pref houses on her card and not matching to that one house (suiciding). A snap bid is relatively rare and not something to count on. A pnm will not get a 'better' house through a snap bid; accept that they already released you and move on. If you really really don't like either of your pref houses then don't sign the card and accept that you won't get a bid. If you will only definitely accept a bid from one of your pref houses then only put that one on your card and accept that you might not get that bid. Snap bids not a short cut to "get a bid before bid day." They are only a strategy for houses trying to bid to quota.

If a girl SIPs,aka single intentional preference aka suicides, she is NOT eligible for a snap bid. Don’t get this confused with a girl that has an pref invitation to only one party. She would be eligible for a snap bid.

Incorrect. A pnm is absolutely eligible for a snap bid if she SIPS and doesn't get that bid. This is per NPC rule. And a pnm who only gets one pref house is guaranteed that bid if she attends and puts them on her card, so she wouldn't be in the running for a snap anyway.

Also, you must be confused with Quota Addition. A pnm who SIPs and doesn't match to that house is not eligible to be a Quota Addition. But she is eligible for a snap.
