Return on pref night by house

by: PNM Counselor

What’s the likelihood a PNM will bet a bid from a house if she goes there for pref and puts them down as her first choice on her final card? And does a house with a higher return rate get to bring fewer PNMs to pref because Panhellenic knows their return rate on pref night? Would that be by tier (like tier 1 houses bring fewer back for pref because almost all of them will pref that house after pref night)?

PNM Counselor is an awfully pompous title to give yourself, even on here, but I'll play...First of all, the tiers you are talking about are imaginary, made up, not real, and have nothing to do with actual sorority life or recruitment. Truth is that nobody but panhellenic and recruitment chairs knows the actual RFM rates for a particular house, and they aren't telling, so anything you hear is just tent talk, not factual. You'd be surprised on the actual numbers vs the hearsay. Second, yes, stronger recruiting houses must make more releases every single round including for pref. Numbers aside, the main thing that the sororities must consider when making pref invite lists is that every single pnm invited to that round is going to be on their bid list somewhere and therefore could be a sister. That is how they are selecting for pref. Third, the odds favor a pnm getting her first choice through bid matching/quota plus, but there is no guarantee. You could certainly get either one. You have no idea what houses your fellow pnm's are attending nor how they are ranking. That and more figures into bid matching no matter how strong a certain house is in recruiting. There is one certainty though: if you suicide you are not guaranteed a bid to that house. If you don't match with them before they reach quota you're done and out and cannot be a quota addition. Rank that second house if you have it and give it a shot.

Very helpful. I really appreciate it. Completely agree/understand re the tiers - just was easier to reference on here I suppose. Those I’ve counseled this year have cut “top tier” houses round 1 and continue to list “tier 4 and 5” houses near the top of their lists. What is best to one PNM is different from what’s best to another.

I’ll ask another question if you’re still playing … if a PNM loves her top house and is mediocre about her second … with the risk of suicide you mention, the PNM may think it better to still do that, and if she does not land in her top house then she’s still able to accept a snap bids or be open to COBs. So my question - how likely is it for snap bids? I have to think given the process it’s common for most houses to have 1 or 2 snap bids they have to offer to fill quota. Any idea? Or too big of a risk?

God help anybody you are giving advice to because you know absolutely nothing. The sororities are making the decisions here about the cuts, pnm's don't drop houses. Only tippy top girls that several chapters are fighting over have that luxury and those are a very small number of girls. Snap bid chance is slim to none and it is a terrible strategy for a pnm. A house that dropped a pnm earlier is really not going to turn around and offer a snap. And she's not getting a snap from her #1 pref house either if she didn't match to them on a suicide because they would have matched to quota before they got to her and they will not be issuing any snaps. BUT, if that pnm has not SIP'd (suicided) and doesn't match with #1 or #2 before they each fill to quota, she will still get a bid through Quota Plus and the algorithm will try to match her with her #1. Not a guarantee but it's still a chance. If she SIP's then this is not an option if she doesn't match with that one house, and she's without a bid and getting a heartbreaking call. And COB's right after bid day aren't really a thing unless a house still didn't reach quota and really wants/needs some new members, but if it's just one or two they move on and focus on their new member class. COB is usually a second semester thing. By then House Total is reset and houses may be picking up some new pnm's but there is no spring rush and most COB's are offered privately. A pnm's best shot at a bid is fall recruitment and you can't ever get your first semester experience back. It is the absolute best. All houses offer experiences that are far more similar than different. At every house, you're part of a large new member class that will form bonds and find close friend groups, (and finding 3-5 close friends you LOVE is winning), have football game days and parties, homecoming, formals, all that stuff. Most people can find a close friend group, when houses here are so large, if they will open their heart, give it a chance at #2, and make an effort as a new member. Girls do this all the time and find out they are so happy, would never want another house, and never look back. If a pnm does this and still isn't feeling it, she can drop before initiation and try again in the fall.

what’s quota plus?

Quota Plus guarantees a bid to every pnm who attends pref and ranks both her houses, even when it puts a house over Quota. Chapter membership does not know who these girls are and neither do the pnm's. They get a bid! A pnm who only has one house at pref is getting that bid if she attends the party and puts them on her card; stress free happy happy! Pnm's who attend two prefs and only rank one house are not eligible to be a quota addition.
