athletes in sororities
by: Soon to be freshmanI am hoping to go to UGA next year. I am OOS but have close connections to UGA (my whole family is from GA) and connections to many sororities. I play basketball and am hoping to play in college. I am wondering if many sororities have athletes rather than just cheerleaders. I didn't know if playing a sport would make a difference. Thanks!

The time commitment is the issue, so not a whole lot of athletes try to make both work. There is no problem with you being an athlete though, as far as how sororities would consider you. If you are good at time management and can do sorority and basketball and keep your grades up then good for you. But sorority would come third for you behind grades and team commitment and your house would be understanding.

I know a 2 volleyball players who were in DDD and SK, a softball player in DG, and a soccer player in Theta. All 4 of them loved their chapter but ended up dropping by the middle of our freshman year because the time commitment kept them from being able to be involved in their sororities.
Every sorority wants to take well rounded girls who are involved in other things, so I don’t see it as an issue in recruitment at all. Like the other commenters have said, being a student athlete comes first and is a huge time commitment. Also most student athletes have a close bond with their teammates, so you just have to decide for yourself if joining a sorority will be worth it to you.
