view on legacys?!?

by:

I'm a legacy rushing this fall and im going into rush with a open mind about all of the sororites but my friend told me not to tell other houses I'm a legacy because they will drop me assuming I will choose that house. On the flip side I was also told that if other houses know you're a legacy they will want you more because they try to take legacys from each other. I'm just wondering if either of these are true and if it's anything I should worry about.

While some sororities try to steal away other legacies, they only do that if you're also one of the top PNMs. Sororities often make early cuts based on which girls they think don't want to be there and girls who announce that they're legacies to other houses tend to be in that group m. So it's definitely safer to keep your legacy status on the dl at other houses, and if it comes up, make it clear that you're keeping an open mind. If you seem disinterested, you'll almost for sure be cut.

If I'm not mistaken, your legacy status is asked on your recruitment application so, I believe, every sorority is privy to that information. I'm a legacy too, and I did wind up pledging my legacy house (which i thrilled with), but my options were severely cut very early in the rush week. I feel certain this is because my sorority is notorious for honoring their legacies and taking a very high number of legacy pnm's, so I think lots of houses cut me assuming I would pledge elsewhere. I didn't discuss my legacy at all except in my legacy house. Really, just keep an open mind. You have very little control of what will happen, so enjoy the ride. Good luck!

They ask on the application but you can always leave it blank lol

I would leave it off. That's what I did. At my legacy house (which I did end up pledging) the girls I talked to already knew I was a legacy from my recs, and I casually brought it up in conversation on the first day just in case they didn't know. I think this is a better strategy because no houses will cut you due to your legacy status.

If I already registered as a legacy is it a good idea to remove it from my profile? I think it's on a lot of my recommendation letters too

Why would your recs mention any other house?

This is a common mistake for a lot of PNMs. You NEVER want to let other houses know where you're a legacy. I just wrote a rec for a girl at another school (my sorority's chapter there is new so they're accepting collegiate recs). She listed like 5 family member from other sororities in her resumed and I'm just like why would she do that?! I was nice and left that info off the rec I wrote for her, but not everyone would help a PNM out like that. Your best bet now is to realllyyyyy stress that you're keeping an open mind at each house during the first round of recruitment though!
