importance of recs

by:

Hi I'm rushing this fall and I'm wondering how important recs are? I'm having a hard time getting them. Do I have a shot at getting into a middle tier sorority without one?

I don't even know how to begin to address this really.

1. YOU NEED RECS. Some girls will tell you that you don't, it's likely because these girls got very, very lucky during recruitment. What do I mean by this? These girls might be especially pretty, or they might have had WONDERFUL conversations during recruitment. This is hard to do because you're generally only given twenty or so minutes to talk with someone. Bottom line, it's difficult to get into a deep conversation with someone you just met. You won't hit it off with everyone.
Also, SOMETIMES, sororities will secure recs for you. I think three sororities at UGA accept collegiate recs, so girls in those houses are currently writing recs for PNMs. Other houses contact alums from the PNM(s)' towns/areas & try to secure a rec. Pretty much every house includes the rec in your score, some give this section more weight than others. IT DEPENDS, BUT JUST KNOW THAT RECS ARE IMPORTANT.

2. YOU WILL BE HAPPY WHERE YOU END UP. No, I can't assure you that you won't end up in a bottom tier house. What I can tell you? AOII is considered an upper-middle or lower-top tier house, and I've heard they put very little weight in recs. AKA, you could end up there. A bottom tier like DPhiE or DG might put a lot of weight in recs, however. I don't know. Please don't think that just because a house is top tier, you HAVE to have some sort of connection. Also, similarly, having connections doesn't guarantee you a bid anywhere.

This is mostly accurate. Almost all houses are required to have a rec in order to offer you a bid, but they will try to find recs for the girls they really like all the way up to pref round. If you're having trouble finding recs, at least prioritize the "top tier" houses, as well as any sorority that doesn't have a big presence in Georgia. (You can look on each sororities website to find out have many chapters and alumni groups are in Georgia). The reason these should be your priorities for recs is because 1. Most girls have recs for the top tier houses since they tend to en most desired, so those houses expect you to have a rec. 2. If a sorority had a smaller presence in Georgia or the south in general, the girls in the chapter will have a harder time finding alumni (or even collegians for the 3 sororities that allow that) who know you and can write you a rec. For example - like the other commenter said, even though DG isn't one of the strongest chapters here, they are still required to have a rec for each girl they bid. even though they're huge nationally, they only have 1 chapter in Georgia so they won't be able to easily find a connection for every single pnm they want. So if you don't have recr, you could get cut from all the top houses, as well as sororities from other tiers simply because they aren't going to keep inviting you back knowing they can't offer you a bid.

And I just want to add: It's possible to slip through the cracks during recruitment. I'm not saying this to scare you, but it's a reality for many PNMs each year. If you receive the same scores as another girl for conversation at a house, but the other girl has a rec, she will almost certainly be asked back to the house over you. Recruitment for many houses at UGA is simply by numbers. We're not a small school, so it's impossible for every girl in every house to be aware of each girl going through recruitment. Recs are relied on as an introduction into a chapter, and if you get a good rec, it will boost your overall score by some house's standards.

This is so very true. Honestly most PNMs would be happy in any sorority at UGA, but some girls get cut from every house each year just because of numbers. The two most important things a pnm can do to increase her odds of getting a bid are 1. Get recs for every chapter 2. Keep an open mind during recruitment. There's always a chance that your least favorite house is the one that offers you a bid. So if you keep an open mind, you might find out that the sorority is actually a lot different than you thought during rush, and if you still hate it, you can always drop later on. Better bottom than bid-less! (My gamma chi when I rushed told our group that the first day of rush and then she got in trouble for acknowledging that tiers exist hahahaha)

Agree with above. A rec just gives us, sororities, a heads up that you're coming. If your resume is particularly good, we've got an eye out for you. We're waiting to meet you. With the sheer volume of girls coming through our houses each day, wouldn't you want to have an advantage? You've never done this before, so you don't know, but there are an overwhelming number of girls that rush at UGA. I would hate for you to slip through the cracks because you didn't do some groundwork this summer. Get the recs, it's worth your time (and be sure and add a picture if you can).
