tbh about formal rush process
by: TBHHi everyone! So I formal rushed at UGA in 2015 & wanna share my experience; maybe it'll help some PNMs. Going through formal, I had for the most part an open mind. I went into UGA not knowing a single person. I didn't know about southern traditions or tiers or any of that. I knew 1 older girl who'd gone to UGA and was in a sorority there & she told me throughout the entire process to just keep an open mind. However, as I went through rush I heard about these tiers & rankings& so I asked my friend about it all & this time she said "unless you really click with them, I wouldn't go ___; they're known as being the bottom house. _____ isn't great either". I wasn't crazy about the first house she mentioned (the supposed bottom one), but the second one I was really enjoying. But you know what? I was enjoying it for the wrong reasons. The sorority I liked was calling back mostly pretty girls so I felt special being called back too. I liked them for their house, their recruitment video, etc. In fact, this same sorority is the one I accepted my bid to. & guys... I HATED it. Needless to say, I lasted about a month & a half in that sorority. I'm not one to walk out or give up so dropping was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Let me tell you, there's nothing more awkward than seeing those girls who I would've called my sisters on campus. Don't judge houses by their social calendar, looks, etc. b/c in the end you want a GENUINE SISTERHOOD. that's what a sorority is all about!!

YES to this. When you go through recruitment ask the girls why they joined their sorority and ask about their sisterhood!! You want a strong sisterhood bc these are going to be your friends for life. You can always go to frat parties during the week even if it's a frat not on your social calendar. All girls are welcome at these big parties. However, you're stuck with your sisters for 4 years and life. And pick a house that you connect with their philanthropies bc you're required to help out with those by most if not all, so make sure you're passionate about them.

Great post! Every day on this site, sororities are talked up and torn down based on their social calendar. It drives me nuts! We are about so much more than that. Sisterhood should be why we pledge, not partying. Anyone and everyone can party in Athens. Sisterhood is the bond that holds us together and makes us special, strong, and unique!

If we could get an accurate ranking based on sisterhood and involvement, there tiers would look wayyyy different. Whether you're at a top house or a bottom house, if everyone is being fake and you feel like you have to be someone you're not to get them to like you, it's not the right house for you. And there are pretty, social girls in every house. And you really can socialize with whoever you want bc almost all frat parties are open to any sorority girls. For example I'm in a mid tier house and my best friends from my PC and I hang out with SAE allllll the time, and the guys like us even though they don't have a social with our sorority. And with the philanthropy - it's great if you connect with it but you don't have to be super involved. The philanthropies I personally like the best are Zeta's, Phi Mu's, and DG and even though none are bad, I wouldn't connect well with SK's or AGD's. But I didn't end up in any of those houses but it didn't matter because I knew most of my volunteer work would be outside of my sorority anyways (Relay for Life and tutoring kids) and I have sisters in my chapter who are also involved there. So ultimately genuine sisterhood and finding where you're accepted for who you are are the most important things to consider during recruitment. If you base your decision off of looks/socials/Greek rank crap/philanthropy or anything else, there's a good chance you'll be unhappy in the end or even potentially get released from every house.

I agree with most everything said, but you definitely don't have to be passionate about your philanthropy. It's an added bonus of course, but there are only two philanthropy events per year, one in fall & one in spring, that you'll have to attend for your chapter.
Some sororities' philanthropies are easy to get into (zta's is breast cancer), and others aren't as easy to get into (pi phi & kappa's philanthropy is literacy)... Point is, if you chose the right house, you'll have fun at your philanthropy event whether you're "passionate" about your philanthropy or not. And for some people, maybe literacy will become a passion of yours! Who knows?
Helping others is awesome! There's no need to put it on a scale of how awesome it is.
Again, loving your philanthropy CAN be an added bonus, though. However, unless you feel strongly about a certain philanthropy (maybe someone in your family has been affected by a particular disease), then try to base your choice off SISTERHOOD. Philanthropy is great, but you're literally joining a house for their SISTERHOOD.
Again, SISTERHOOD. Also, don't trust this site to tell you whose sisterhood is better. There are nearly 300 girls in each house. It's literally impossible for anyone on this site to REALLY know about a house's sisterhood.
Like someone above said, ask girls during recruitment about their sisterhood! That's the best way to tell. You'll know if you're getting a real answer or not.
