alpha phi

by: Transfer

Hi! I'll be transferring in the fall of 2017 as a sophomore and I heard alpha phi is coming that year. While I am looking forward to rushing and everything, this idea of leading the way for alpha phi intrigues me. What do you all think about their coming here?? Are you excited for them or is it kind of not that big of deal? Haha just wondering about your thoughts!

On one hand, getting 2 new sororities within a couple years is nice because it will make quotas smaller for everyone, make it easier for the houses that are already here to get the girls they want, and change things up since Greek life has been about the same for the last 15 years. I think people are more excited about alpha phi and DPhiE because alpha phi is bigger nationally and UGA is one of the only SEC schools that doesn't have an aphi chapter. On the other hand, while I think alpha phi has the potential to become a upper mid-top tier sorority eventually, they're most likely going to be off to a rough start because DPhiE came here first. If you wanted the appeal of being a founding member, DPhiE would have been the better opportunity but honestly if you join alpha phi, they probably wouldn't have a decent chapter here until your junior or senior year at least. Considering 90-95% of PNMs already get bids here, I honestly wish we had just gotten alpha phi and then got DPhiE in 5 years or so (or the other way around). Considering basic supply and demand (between 19 chapters, there won't be enough good PNMs to go around) I think you have to evaluate whether being a founding member is worth being in the bottom house on campus for most of your time in college. It's the same with DPhiE, except DPhiE at least has a little while to get set up before aphi comes here so idk which will be stronger at first

Tldr: in the long run it's cool that UGA will have more sororities but because we're getting 2 in such a short time, they're both going to be off to a rough start at first since we already have space for most of the PNMs but alpha phi will probably be good in the long run, not until after you graduate though

I am actually a founding sister for DPhiE here and I love it! Being a founder is, at first, completely different than getting a bid from an already existing sorority, but it ends up being the same exact thing! What I really enjoy about being a founder is that there was no reputation for us and no traditions - we've worked really hard to build a great reputation. I did rush, but I ended up withdrawing myself because I couldn't see myself in any of the last houses that I had... But anyways, being a founder is awesome. We get to decide what we do and how we do it, we get to go out there and make our name known, and we also get to decide rules, laws, and such.

Starting off will be difficult, but it will be worth it! I knew I definitely found my home my second semester.

Honestly, I love being a founder and I seriously think you should consider being a founder for Alpha Phi since it already looks like you are so excited about it! I have sisters that knew right away that they wanted to be a DPhiE so they didn't go through rush or anything.

I think you should go through rush and check it out, see how you feel at each house and keep an open mind! If you are still thinking about Alpha Phi at the end of each day and you truly believe you are an Alpha Phi, withdraw yourself and join Alpha Phi! Whatever you decide, make sure you are doing it for YOU! You're going to have a blast!!

Ultimately you just have to decide what is more important to you - a solid, typical sorority experience or the opportunity to be a founding member of a chapter but have the first year or two seem more like a club than a sorority. But either way you have a while to decided. Stick to high school for now, enjoy senior year, get accepted to UGA, then decide what you want to do about choosing a sorority.

Haha I just read that you'll be transferring so nevermind about the high school part. You still have a while to decide though
