old row priorities

by:

Do old row sororities tend to care more about legacies and old money girls than about looks? Like most people agree that Theta is top tier, and I tend to agree, but lately I've met a couple Thetas who aren't pretty at all, and have awkward personalities. I know one girl is a legacy and her family is rich af but idk about the other one. I've seen girls like this in the other old row sororities as well and I'm confused as to how they got a bid in a top tier house. So I guess my main question based on this is what qualities are the most important deciding factors for the old row houses?

You've seen "a couple" that aren't pretty? EVERY sorority has at least several girls like that. I think for every sorority, family status & your high school friends (who are now selecting you) matter a lot more than looks because I know a few gorgeous, smart, non-awkward girls in bottom tier sororities because they didn't have the connections to be picked by anyone else.

I don't think the old row houses still have first pick of all the best girls. Lots of girls especially rank xo & kappa towards the bottom of their lists for various reasons.

Also, it's very naive to think that any awkward or unattractive girls were unwanted there; girls want to bid their friends! And yes most chapters want to be pretty but I think who you know matters even more. And don't forget parents. It would be really hard to cut the daughter or sister of someone who is very involved with the chapter, maybe even present during rush, or makes big donations etc.

I've never heard of anyone ranking kappa last lmao! I guess if your worst enemy is a kappa then maybe? But almost everyone I know likes kappa as a whole.

Self-righteous much? You don't even know any kappas. Speaking as someone who ACTUALLY KNOWS Kappas - you are WRONG. Do Kappas like to have a good time? Yes. - And It's probably a very good guess that there aren't any more partiers in your sorority than there are in Kappa. Repeating a "saying" made up about their letters, (just like other houses have "sayings" made up about theirs, and probably yours), doesn't make it true. It's sad that a self-righteous person like you has nothing better to do at 3 AM (based upon the time stamp of your other uplifting post) than to spread hate. What I like about Kappas is that they don't have to hate to get ahead, and hopefully others won't take your bait and lower themselves to bash others. Move on and grow up.

Agreed. Also tired of dancing on AGD's grave and chi o's slipping rampage.
Nobody likes haters and hate is the last thing this campus wants or needs especially at this time.

Oh and what you said about it not being hard to get a bid: I know a girl who was cut from all those houses you named (plus all the rest except for the bottom 2) and she was very beautiful, an athlete, valedictorian of her high school, sweet personality, lots of activities, etc. So YES it is hard!!

And no she did not have any scandals or issues that I am leaving out.

That's one person who slipped through the cracks. Recruitment is partly a numbers game. Good girls can get skipped over occasionally. But there are TONS of girls who are average at best who get bids in mid or upper mid tier houses without having strong connections. And the vast majority of girls who rush get a bid. Last year it was like 96% or something, the year before that it was 93-94% and then 4 years ago was also around 92-93% of girls who rushed that got bids if I heard correctly. I also heard that 3 years ago that percent was a lot lower (only 75-80% maybe) who got bids and that's why quotas have been huge the last 2 years but I don't remember where I heard that or what the exact number was so don't quote me on that. My point is just that generally, it's not too hard to get a bid here, and there are wayyyy more girls who are average or below average than just the ones in the bottom sororities. And even those sororities get some really good girls as well, just not as many

Where did you get those numbers? I read that only 4% of girls were released from recruitment last year but I've never heard anything about previous years. I'm especially curious about the junior PC number being a lot lower. The junior PC in my sorority is smaller than our senior graduating PC but I always assumed fewer people rushed that year or something. And I have friends in a couple other sororities that have said their junior PCs are on the smaller side as well

Those numbers might be what the university uses or what's written in the Pointer, I don't know. What I do know is there's a reason those percentages are so high. UGA cuts so heavily and brutally in the first rounds, a huge number of girls are devastated and drop on their own. Really good candidates who never got a fair shake are dismissed before they even get to know anyone. I would bet money that 94% of girls who got bids means 94% of the girls who actually make it to pref got a bid, not 94% of the girls who started round one. UGA (and all of SEC) Rush is a bloodbath!

What I read on either the pointer or the Panhellenic website for UGA said that last year 4% of girls were released from recruitment last year. So that wouldn't include girls who chose to drop. But I'm a junior and although I never saw the numbers for that year, 5 girls from my gamma chi group were released from every house before pref round and 2 more chose to drop. My roommate was released after pref round and said there had been 3-4 girls released from here group already as well. So I've always wondered why so many more people got cut that one year because it had to be wayyyy higher than 4-6%

Wow this thread has made me nervous lol. I'm from out of state but I'm going to UGA as a freshman in the fall and definitely want to rush. No one from my family is in Greek life except for my aunt, but I'm not considered a legacy for her sorority and I don't know anyone at UGA so I've been trying to figure it my chances of getting a bid. I'm completely open minded to any of the chapters, but I guess I would prefer to not end up in DPhiE since they're not an established chapter yet, and tradition and strong sisterhood are things that I really value when I think of Greek life. I'd still accept a bid from them though! I've lined up recs for 4 sororities so far, but idk if I'll be able to find recs of all of them. I also have a 3.9 GPA, and a lot of involvement from high school. I think I'm a friendly/not awkward person, although I've never been super outgoing. I'm the type of person to have a few really close friends but not a huge squad. Let's just say that I can round up recs for 10/18 sororities before August. Realistically what are my odds for getting a bid since I'm out of state and have zero connections to UGA and almost no connections to Greek life, but I'm open to accepting a big anywhere? Also what can I do to improve my chances and what sororities do I have the best chances at?

Also in terms of looks, I'd guess I'm a 7-8/10. I'm skinny/athletic and on the shorter side, and I don't have acne or any strange deformities lol. I'm trying to be at least somewhat vague though because I don't want anyone to figure out who I am during recruitment.

Dphie is an established chapter and any sorority at UGA values sisterhood and tradition! Just go in open minded and you'll find your home.

Just because they didn't have a rec on your behalf. Other ways to improve your chances, make sure you know and can talk about the following topics: high school involvement, why you want to join a sorority, what your best traits are, how you plan to get involved with UGA, any major service projects you did, what hobbies/interests you're the most passionate about etc... You want to be genuine but you also want to present yourself well. Most importantly you need to show them that you're a friendly person. Keep in mind, we're looking for sisters, littles, grandlittles, future bffs. While you'll spend a lot of time talking about resume stuff which is important, we need to see your personality. You really need to be likeable. Also, make sure your outfits are on point each day. Fashionable, flattering, not too long or too short etc... Finally what sororities you have a good chance at: basically anything that's not old row (adpi, theta, kappa, phi mu, and chi o) even though chi o has fallen they still recruit a lot of legacies and old south types. Since you're less outgoing, you might have a good chance at AOPi, Pi Phi, AXO, Gamma Phi, and DG since they all have less of a wild parties reputation. DPhiE can 100% be your backup if you don't love them during recruitment. But at the end of the day, just be open minded, realistic, go with your gut, and see how things go in August. I wish you the best of luck!

Last thing to clarify haha: AOPi, Pi Phi, AXO, Gamma Phi and DG are the houses that I think you might have the best chance of connecting with since they seem to attract girls who are less outgoing. Your best chance of getting a bid in terms of rank/numbers/being realistic will be with AXO, Tri Delt, Pi Phi, Gamma Phi, DZ, AGD, DG, and DPhiE since they're generally the bottom half of the sororities in terms of rankings. I don't know you, you could be a top tier PNM, but just given your lack of connections there's a good chance you'll end up in one of those.
