Change frats

by: Question

I’m a first year and I got initiated this sem and I only rushed one frat (big mistake). I got initiated a month or so ago but I feel that I joined the wrong frat. The way they handle issues and how the brothers act is not at all how they seemed when I was rushing. Everything seems disorganized and I have no confidence in my president currently with how he’s handling things. We also threw not so fun parties compared to others I went to. The alumni’s are weird aswell. Is it possible to drop my frat and rush another one next semester? I always wanted to join a frat and i don’t want my uni experience to be defined by a frat I didn’t know was so bad and disorganized with poor leadership. Can I still rush zeta/du/dke/phikap??

all of the frats are part of nic and the agreement is that once youre initiated youre a brother for life. BUT, no one is really stopping you from rushing another frat. just drop your old frat, be removed from nationals, and im sure if you explain your situation to the brothers of the other frats (ESPECIALLY if youre adphi or lambda lmao) theyll definitely understand. im sorry you got fooled by the facade, happens from time to time.

For IFC under the NIC you cannot join another fraternity if you have already been initiated into one under any circumstances.

In my experience, the problems you mentioned are the case at every house to some extent. It's a group of 20 year old alcoholics trying to self govern, some level of disorganization comes with the territory. All houses have their public façade, but internally things aren't nearly as perfect.

I would talk to your brothers about your concerns, I think you'd be surprised how receptive they are.

Being in a fraternity isn't for everyone, often it's a lot of hard work and stress for little to no personal benefit or recognition, if you don't have a strong relationship with your brothers then I could imagine that isn't very worthwhile.

I’ve tried for like 2 months and no progress. It just is wild to me how these people don’t see problems with their own house and the frat considering that for a lot of them their entire life revolves around it. I feel more disconnected from the brothers than ever and I feel as if saying I’m part of this fraternity to anyone but the people in my fraternity is like a self-insult, I’ve already lost some friends I made during orientation. I want to join one of the more respectable frats on St. George considering I’m more aware of the options. I’ve looked into it and I can join another frat, not completely legitimately, but informally so maybe that’s the choice I have to make.

@Question: I’m in a sorority and I joined in my first year. For a long time I didn’t feel like I fit in etc but after a while when I talked to the girls and actually put some effort into the friendships I ended up really liking it. I would say give it some time and put in some effort and if it doesn’t work out just drop. I know it’s hard but also remember that your whole college experience doesn’t depend on the frat you’re in etc it depends on how you spend your time and who you spend it with so really try to put in some effort and give it some time. Also other frats may seem great on the outside but they most likely have the same issues that you mentioned. Best of luck <3

@Gingerbread: One of my other first year friends rushed one of the four frats I mentioned above (we were gonna rush together but he didnt like my frats parties) and everything I am experiencing with my frat is not at all happening in his. I have talked about my problems thinking its normal but he was surprised himself to hear my issues and supports the idea of me dropping since my frat is so inept. I don't understand how we put up such a charade to sororities, if they knew how the guys talked about them they would DEFINITELY cut any ties we still have. It hurts me to see such objectification of women but I dont want to snitch and drop names. I dont know which sorority youre in, but I hope its not one of the ones we mixed with. God bless. <3

@Question: I can say with 100% confidence that 2/4 frats that you named say (and do) disgusting things about girls especially sorority girls. Your friend got lucky with his frat I guess but trust me when I say the misogynistic behaviour doesn’t just end with your frat it’s literally everywhere in Greek life. Very few frats have manners and know how to treat and think of women as literal human beings. If you see that the behavior runs in everyone in the frat I would definitely leave if that’s something that bothers you cause you don’t want to surround yourself with people who don’t have the same values as you. At the end of the day your frat isn’t just about partying they’re guys that are supposed to be there for your during your college years helping you grow as a person :)

@Gingerbread: you’re right. I shouldn’t assume that other frats are simply better, the grass is always greener on the other side. I have heard stories about the frats i mentioned (guessing the 2/4) but I wasn’t there during it like zeta with the SA case and dke with the school article (btw it literally doesn’t make sense to me it was two random guys that said drinks are spiked and then the girls felt dizzy probably from drinking anyway???). I just don’t want to be associated with this kind of talk about others if screenshots get out and this sort of ego. Our relations with other frats aren’t the best either cause the brothers think we’re too good but our open/invite parties are barely tolerable for me so I have no idea where this mindset comes from. Zeta/phi kap seem more put together as a frat and du/dke simply throw better parties. I want to associated with that and participate in those but I feel like I got cheated by joining this one, the worst of both worlds. I don’t want to turn into the brothers here and I feel like I will if I stay so maybe I’ll drop Greek life all together I don’t know. Thank you. Peace be with you.

@question

Hey which sororities are close with this frat?

Drop a hint if you don’t want to say

@Hey: I don’t want to really reveal my frat and myself to get it but in my opinion the sororities we associate with are near or are the top tier here I bet, although I have no idea how people see all the sororities I only know a few of them.

@Hey: In addition, I don’t know if this means anything to you but I heard “panhel” and “being reported to panhel” or “banned from panhel” being said sometimes, whatever you make of that you probably know more than I do.

Drop your frat and rush another one. Nobody cares.
