consequences of underground fraternity

by:

So I don’t get it , like if I wanted to join dke what would the actual consequences be. It seems like kicking a fraternity off campus doesn’t actually do anything. Is there something I’m missing? Can you actually get in trouble ?

I'm not entirely sure either, but from what I have heard from other people, dke is essentially a gang right now. The liability that they take on for every party is 100% on them and not tied in with the school. If someone were to pass out at a dke party, there would be no organizational amnesty and they would be charged just the same as normal citizens would. You can still join but just understand that all of the benefits of being in a greek organization go out the door since it is not considered a fraternity at Wake Forest anymore. Besides parties and a group of friends to hang out with there is nothing more to joining dke from 2018-2222

Sort of right. They would have networking opportunities and do have alumni and national support. Very much unlike kappa sig or sig nu who were both never even close to DKE status

“Besides friends to hangout with and parties”

Isn’t that the same as any recognized fraternity lmao

well no, recognized fraternities have an alumni network since their members are registered through the national fraternity. Obviously the majority point of joining a fraternity is about the social benefits but i was just answering the question that the person asked which is what the consequences of joining dke would be. never said it was a bad thing to join

The legal aspect of joining an underground fraternity is more risky. I think that’s obvious. No national backing or backing from the school. Both could try to pursue legal action if an underground group continues to operate after losing permission to do so. That said there is a solid amount of uncertainty that no one can predict. Kappa Sig and Sigma Nu both we’re underground for a few years (not sure how long), but they both had to try to merge because of legal issues I think. I can’t tell you the exact legal problems you could face, but I can say that the uncertainty of the whole situation is risky. It would be naive to think otherwise.

K sig situation was a lot different. From what I’ve heard DKE is in the best position it possibly could have

DKE could easily be recognized nationally. They got kicked off 4 years for a keg... why would they shut down a very successful organization that has produced many successful alumni and very strong leaders.

they were kicked off for breaking suspension rules. they were not kicked off for having a keg.

They can do whatever they want without accountability - which is not necessarily a good thing. Networking benifts gone.

They are just gonna have the best parties on campus every week now that they don’t have to register parties. Will probably be more exclusive tho

yeah it'll have to be super exclusive, and basically if you live in the house you're subject to real legal troubles every time dke throws a party..so take what you will with that

Normally yes liability and networking are the only different things. However DKE is not a usual situation right now. They have full alumni support, a house, and potential national recognition(very uncommon). This is because many people disagree with the schools controversial decision. That means they can still operate as a fraternity with no liability issues. You would still have networking abilities since DKE probably had the best network of all Greek life at WFU. DKE has many underground brothers already and is not an issue.

No you’re not going to get in trouble. If you like the guys there the best then go for it. They are a great group of fun guys!

I think the biggest issue they face is that because they aren't recognized by the school, the school will go out of the way to get rid of them. They don't want an unrecognized fraternity operating and will put a lot of pressure on DKE if they get caught operating which will inevitably happen

if they get national recognition tho then there’s nothing the school would be able to do. They would be stuck living with their own decision to lose their power to regulate them

It would be better than rushing a fraternity that is on probation but still recognized lol

If u were interested in dke before this only helps your situation. If they had been suspended say 1 or 2 years instead they would be on interim suspension and not able to do anything very social for a long time in order to save their charter and keeep support. That decision only strengthens their support.

Lots of other frats are caught up in the cycle of probation. It’s the schools way of controlling the fraternities ie. get put on social probation leads to frats obviously having a party leading to interim suspension and the never ending cycle to get off.

IMO while they may be recognized by the school, there’s no real benefit to that. Just ask KA haha
