Pi Beta Phi lost their charter back in like 2011. Since the girls had been initiated as members into an NPC sorority, they couldn't form a new chapter of a different NPC sorority. That's where KBG came in, since they're not NPC, the former Pi Phis could join and have a chapter of kbg without violating rules of panhel. That's why ppl call KBG "fake" because it's not NPC, it's not big at any other school (they're national, but have only like 17 chapters), and you don't graduate with the same alumni network you would as an NPC sorority. Their nationals also might ignore some of the chapters partying and what not because the Wake chapter of KBG is probably their strongest chapter nationally.
It is a real sorority, over 100 years old that has its own ritual, but because of its small size and the way it formed at Wake, people don't think about it or treat it the same way.
You can find old OGB articles online about it if you Google it.
