are connections and recommendations essential or at least very important in the recruitment process?

yes. you need someone on your side in the house when the members are voting or you can sometimes fall through the cracks. recs help, especially since some houses will not take you without one.

no not necessarily! if your resume is good and you connect well with the girls who rush you you'll be okay, it's just that some of the top houses may cut you. i was cut by 3 "top" houses that i didn't know anyone in but that's it. try your best to get one rec for each house though.
