is every frat boots and jeans?

by:

I am accepted into the engineering school for fall 2016. I am a successful student and want to surround myself with successful people in college, make great friends, and have a great college experience. I plan to attend the summer events and rush in the fall. I don't hunt or fish, wear boots, levis or wranglers or drive a truck. I can shoot a shot gun with pretty good accuracy though. I know a lot about cars among other things, and drive a very nice 2 door sports car. Is there any fraternity that is not all cowboys? Not that that is a bad thing. I am not not a cowboy.

It's Texas and its Texas A&M, lots of people are like what you describe but it's not like our fraternities are cowboy clubs. Pretty much every fraternity has a mix of all sorts of guys. KA and Beta are the only ones that try to act like they're country (and neither of them actually are)

Maybe Fiji, SAE, or Sig Ep for you then. Though to be honest, SAE and Sig Ep have some not-so-academic people so maybe Fiji. You've certainly got the arrogance down. Hopefully you don't act as annoying as you sound.

Honestly at A&M, if you want to join a prestigious organization, try for one of the on-campus ones. Fraternities are great, but they're not all that well developed at A&M so it's not like you're joining an "elite" group. Idk about engineering groups, just finance ones, but Maroon Coats is a pretty prestigious interdisciplinary group,

No fraternity really places an emphasis on being a "cowboy". Sure the boots and white washes may (or may not) be what is expected for new members to wear, but every fraternity is just a group of a bunch of different guys. Just go though rush and you'll see what it's like. Worrying about this is making it a bigger deal than it really is.

Maybe you should join a sorority. Not everyone in every fraternity is the same. There might be regular people, good people, and kids like you in them.

No need to be a douche.

Honestly frats aren't well developed at A&M and on-campus men's organizations are much more prestigious. (Like, One Army, Ol'AGS, Century Men's Society, etc.)

That may have been true about ten years ago but at this point fraternities are a pretty big thing at A&M. Nothing against those organizations but they don't really come close to comparing, at least not to any of the upper tiers

Some frats are better than on-campus men's organizations. Fiji, KA, SAE, Sig Ep.

About equal: Beta, Delt, Sigma Chi (Delt and Sigma Chi are "better" only in the sense that they throw parties).

Everyone else is below the established men's orgs.

Beta and Delt are definitely above the other men's organizations. Pike and Sigma Chi might be about even with the better of them. But yeah if you're in a bottom tier frat at A&M you might as well have joined something non-greek

This is going to come across as kind of douchey but most of A&M's "men's organizations" are basically the guys who rushed fraternities but didn't get a bid, or the guys who had the backgrounds to get in but just generally weren't very social or big on partying. Like they are pretty popular around campus, but mainly with weird GDI girls and the off-brand sorority girls who are virgins that have never had a sip of alcohol. If that's your thing, that's your thing, but saying any non-greek men's organizations are above any of the established fraternities is absolutely wrong and frankly ridiculous. A&M probably has the 2nd or 3rd strongest public fraternity life in the state

Middle/Bottom tier sororities/frats are still apart of the Aggie Greek Community. Instead of saying, " everyone else is below the established men's orgs. ".. you should be supportive and get girls and guys to Go Greek! We want more people to be Greek than do mens/womens organizations.. right?

But greek life is already the largest form of student organization on campus and that's not going to change. Support greek life and all but don't lie to rushees' faces and pretend like Chi Phi is better for them than Ol Ags or One Army just out of bias

I see both sides of what you two are saying.. Yes, Chi Phi is super super small and obviously is not compared to the organizations listed above.. but if that is what the rushee is looking for and finds a fit, then so be it. It only benefits the Greek community.
