rushing as a sophomore

by:

I'm rushing for the first time as a sophomore and heard upperclassmen are in a different bracket from freshman. How important are Recs and do you have a greater chance of getting into your top picked house?

Recs are pretty important. Some houses will cut you automatically if you don't have one. Some even require two. While you may not know everyone who writes your recs, it's better to try to get someone who personally knows you to write it. As a sophomore it's hard to say what your chances are compared to a freshman. It really just depends on what each sorority is looking for that year. I'm in a "bottom" house and one year we cut all sophomores except for 4 we knew really well because we had too many girls graduating that year and couldn't take a numbers risk in the future. As for the upperclassmen bracket, I though juniors and seniors were considered freebies, but I could be wrong. I'd also like to reiterate that you may think you know what sorority you want right now. If you know girls in that house, then your chances of getting in are a little better. You should also keep an open mind about other houses because there is no guarantee you'll get into your friends' house. Best of luck!

If you're a sophomore, we look at your grades a lot closer and what you were involved in your freshmen year.

If neither of those are good for you, don't worry. Just go into houses explaining why Greek life can change that for you. It worked out for me, and I'm sure it will for you too! Good luck!

There is a different quota bracket for upperclass.

Sophomore dynamics are different. I think it's easier than rushing as a freshman IF you played everything right your freshman year:

1. Hopefully you have a very high GPA (3.5+)
2. Hopefully you made friends with quite a few sorority women last year and have friends pulling for you on the inside. If you didn't do this, it is going to be difficult. If you have a ton of friends at your #1 house, you have a very good chance of getting it.
3. Hopefully you got all your recs lined up - at least 1 for every house.
4. Hopefully you were very involved on campus last year and show leadership potential.
5. Lastly, hopefully you are open to accepting a bid from EVERY house if you really want to be Greek. Don't get set on only a few houses because if you didn't play your freshman year right, it's going to be a tough week.

If you are a sophomore transfer, it's going to be just as difficult as being a freshman because you lack connections, an A&M GPA, and a campus resume.
