top pick?
by: CuriousSo what makes a top girl? What does someone do that makes them really well liked during rush?

Top girls are usually identified months before rush starts. Each city/town has a rush captain who picks the top girls from each high school. Many times, these PNM's already know current members from high school, camp, church, etc. Cannot say enough how important connections are - especially for top 6-8 houses. We study all of the recs that come in- it really is important to have someone who knows you well write it, and to include great pics and a full resume. Legacies are reviewed in depth. Lastly, we make goals about the next PC to make sure our houses remain well-rounded. If we have dance team girls graduating, we want to rush more dancers. If we want to get our GPA up higher, we'll focus on high GPA/SAT's. If a bunch of artistic or athletic girls are graduating, we need new ones!
Between all these things, the rush team puts together a top pnm list. Some houses begin looking at slide shows of top PNM's before work week and rush week. After all this, maybe we've come up with a list of the top 200-350 PNM's and that's who we focus our effort on getting all week. Sure, some other girls will slip in or become a rush week favorite, but almost our entire bid list will be from that initial list of 200-350 PNM's.
At the same time, we're putting together our first cut list for after round 1. Grade risks, no recs, and "questionable reputation" PNM's go on that list and almost nothing they do at round 1 can get them off that list....cold, hard trutH

Girls are clamor in for the top spot. You will be able to spot this a mile away. Look at their parking lots ... Some of the sororities rent high end cars just so you will think they are high society. You can be from "Old Money" but not much of this at A&M. Let's face it most of the old money attend private Woman's Colleges or private East Coast colleges not a state school. So all of this my sorority is better than yours is such a joke. I see lots of girls who think they are but are so new money - barf! I have met some girls who come from very prominent families who chose A&M for academics and not for sorority life. Some of them look down of greek life.
What makes a top girl- private/prep school education (unless you go to Highland Park, Memorial or Alamo Heights) being a legacy, private summer camps ( no church camps) being a debutante, well traveled and well rounded. All girls walk in with good grades, cheerleaders, dance team, etc. But most of all you have to know women in the house. You are right about the connections - the big cities rule and as a result some of the top house miss great girls cause of the way things work. Most of the top houses already have their girls picked before you walk through the door. Sorry but true. BTW Chi Os always dirty rush.

I graduated last year (having rush withdrawl!) from another top house you didn't mention and was one of the 3 girls in the room making the final rush decisions and seeing the lists. Almost all of our bid list comes from that top pnm list.
The beauty of our A&M houses is that each house has different criteria for who their top 300 PNM's are. If a rush team really understands who their house is and what PNM's fit best, the list works. For example, a smart ZTA list probably won't have any HP/ Memorial/ private school girls on it because those girls tend to pick other houses....doesn't mean ZTA cuts those girls, but they don't work as hard for them. In my house we study other houses' legacies carefully. Someone whose mom was a founding member of A&M XO and is extremely involved as an alumna is not going on our top list. Our list is a mirror image of our house and for us, it works well.
