new sorority houses
by: Curious PNMAre there any plans to remodel some of the sorority houses with more beds now that Greek life is getting so much larger at A&M? From the websites that I've read it looks like capacity is around 45-50 for each house but with last year's pledge class at 90 girls that won't be enough for girls who want to live in-house. I know Zeta rebuilt recently so maybe they won't again, but are other sororities thinking of adding wings and additions so more girls will have the chance to live in-house? I'm would be really looking forward to it!

I haven't heard of anything at A&M. Ole Miss, Alabama, Arkansas have chapters that have done 30-45 million expansions/renovations. The Kappa house at Arkansas is an example, and TriDelt at Florida. The new Phi Mu and Kappa houses at Alabama will be gorgeous and huge.

It's small and has small rooms that are closed off, upstairs is not nice. Drainage ditch in front has ruined their front yard, you can thank ZTA rebuilding for that.

That's exactly right. City codes state that for so many sq ft, you have to have so many parking spaces. Const Sci major here :)

Is the land the houses on now school owned or private? A&M has empty land around West Campus between George Bush and Luther Streets close to Callaway. There's also a lot of land around 2818 that could be built as a new sorority row. But getting nationals to fund that would be difficult I guess. UT's houses don't offer parking for the entire house nor do Alabama, Arkansas, or Ole Miss if I recall. They just park their cars in garages.

The university does NOT own any of the houses or land. They're all owned by private house corporations or national house corporations.

Yeah, good luck trying to get all 12 sororities national HQ behind the idea of tearing down the existing houses and rebuilding somewhere else. You do realize that these houses are worth millions and you can't just start a new sorority row, right? A&M is one of the lucky schools with houses. Some campuses don't even have a sorority row and they have to hold rush and chapter meetings in student centers.

Alabama is behind their greek community and their housing. They are giving house loans to all the sororities to rebuild.
At A&M all the houses are 100% owned by the sorority. The land is not good that the houses are on, and most of the houses have, had, or will have foundation issues.
A new sorority row with larger houses on west campus would be huge for greeklife at A&M.

Alabama is also the largest Greek system in the country and their old houses were already on campus. Extremely different situation than we have here. Only thing in common with the two is the SEC which doesn't have much to do with the nuts & bolts of greek life.
Plus, if the land isn't good where the houses are now, what makes you think it's magically better 3 miles away? Geology doesn't quite work that way.

This wasn't something I thought about before but I think that it's an important issue for A&M's Panhellenic to address! When my older sister went to A&M her pledge class was like 45-50 girls so everybody who wanted to live in house their second year usually could. Now with PCs twice that number I'm kind of worried that I won't be able to bond with my sisters as well. How are sororities deciding which members of their PC 14 get to live in-house? Is it lottery or first come first serve?
I wonder if Panhellenic is waiting to see if PC 15 will be as large or larger than 14 before deciding on expansion plans, but they should get on it sooner rather than later. There's a lot of empty land south of the airport or north of West Campus for new houses to be built!

While it's fun to dream, the University will never pony up the cash to just start building us new houses. You'll see a new chapter or chapterS come to campus before that ever happening. Every house is different, but I think most use a point based system to determine who gets to live there.

Alabama financed construction but sororities will pay university a monthly loan amount, it's not free money

Sorority Row was built when A&M did not recognize or want sororities and they were not recognized on campus. No CPC it was a private Panhellenic Association.
It's time to redo the houses and move them on west campus since they are now recognized student organizations.

some of the houses will be very crowded with new pledge classes. Gamma Phi, AXO, ADPi, DZ all have small houses and don't house 50 girls like the rest. XO is chopped up into little rooms and low ceilings.
