greeks in grad school?

by: Curious

I'm currently a high school senior and I've made my choice to attend A&M in the fall but I'm still deciding on whether to go Greek or not. I was curious about sorority women who go to Grad school. I know that you're in your sorority "for life" but if you decide to stay at A&M or law school at anther campus is there a way for women to still be involved in the sorority as a grad student? Do girls from the same sorority but different chapters still hang out together in grad school? This won't impact whether I decide to go Greek or not (I'm leaning towards yes!) but I'm just curious.

Typically, you are obligated to a sorority for four years, unless your rush as a sophomore. You go into "alum status" when you either graduate (undergrad) or get married while you're still in school. I think if you transfer to another school that does not have your chapter you either go inactive or alum. However, you will still be a considered a member of that national sorority. I do not believe you can stay an active member while you are in grad school on the same campus and definitely not if you are on a different campus. I was a fifth year senior but was inactive that year, although if I wanted to I could have continued to pay dues to remain active. I lived with three actives, attended bid day, and even went to semi-formal as one of their dates. You can continue to participate in philanthropy and volunteer during rush behind the scenes, but you will no longer have a vote or be required to pay dues. If you want to be involved after graduation, you can look into being an advisor for your chapter or just volunteer when you feel like it. Sororities often have alum tailgates and reunions, too. After graduation you can join a local alum group that is made up of women of all ages from different chapters across the country. Whether you hang out with girls from different chapter in the same sorority after graduation is up to you. There may be an initial connection, but like any other person, being friends has to do with your chemistry.

Once you graduate, you go alum. You can get involved with alumni chapters and support the sororities.

I'm looking at a program where I will take 4 years of undergrad with an extra year to get a master's but because I'm coming in with AP credits I'll be able to graduate with the masters in 4 years, technically graduating with my undergrad after 3 years. If I rush during my first year, will it be required to go into alum status after the 3 years even though I'll be on campus (and willing to pay dues) for 4 years? When I rush should I even tell sororities that I plan on graduating early or would that hurt me because I only have 3 years as an undergrad? I'm talking about the accounting PPA by the way. If there are other girls here who are doing that I'd love to hear your take on it!

I was in the same situation you are and my sorority is considering me an active for all 4 years that I'll be on campus for the ppa program.

In grad school, you would not hang out with the collegiate chapter. You could volunteer as an advisor if you really wanted to be involved in the collegiate group, but most women who wish to be involved with their sorority after undergrad join an alumni chapter.

The major Texas cities (as well as major cities in other states) typically have multiple alumni chapters in each city. For example, my sorority has a Dallas Day chapter (mostly for older women who don't work or stay at home moms since their events are during the daytime) and a Dallas Night chapter which is mostly young professional alumnae in their 20's. Dallas Night events tend to be more focused on making new friendships (happy hours & other fun activies) than rituals and philanthropy. The Day and Night groups team up for several events throughout the year like Founder's Day and our philanthropy's fundraiser.

Hope this helps!

I'm looking at the PPA program as well! So it looks like some sororities kick you out after you complete your undergrad and some will allow you to continue as long as you keep paying dues even in grad school. Would y'all mind saying which sororities you belong to? My older brother graduated doing PPA and he said he felt just like an undergrad except he dressed up for classes more often. It's all a little confusing because different houses seem like they have different rules!
