rushing

I went through recruitment this year and it did not go well so I dropped. Should I rush again next year? I do not know what I did wrong during this recruitment, any advice?

You probably didn't do anything "Wrong" it's just there were so many girls going through and unfortunately the all the houses have to make cuts after each round. If you didn't drop you would have most likely gotten a bid- now it may not be your first choice, but a bid. The houses everyone wants usually have an idea who they want before recruitment starts because of legacies, HS friends, the right zip code and the sorority knows them somehow and won't cut them. It sucks, because there are some really great girls that got cut for no other reason that they didn't know anyone. Recruitment is a crazy, brutal week emotionally. I would suggest trying to see about getting a bid in the spring. There's no formal recruitment but spots open up because of graduating seniors in December. Not all will have spots, but some will. get to know some girls in your classes maybe. If they have Greek letters on you could ask them or become friends, that would be helpful. Get to know people.

that was a really good answer. this may be a dumb question but how do they already know you and know things about you before they meet you. also how does knowing a girl in that sorority help you ?

Girls know each other from high school or family connections and legacies. Also some sororities cut girls based solely on the zip code from their home address and will only take girls from the "rich" zip codes, sad but true. I have a friend at TU and I know senior year of HS she was going to Austin and spending the night at certain houses already because she had older friends there. AND, of course, she got in that house she spent time at because the girls knew her. You'd be amazed how many connections people have before recruitment. It's totally legal to do that up until summer before recruitment starts. Also, legacies typically get invited to visit houses in the spring with their Mother, sister Grandmother, whoever the legacies family member is. It's not as random of a process as you think. A&M's recruitment is so competitive now because most girls are gorgeous, have great grades and the connections. If you don't know people ahead of time you're at a big disadvantage. Keep your ears open for opportunities for open recruitment this spring- it's easier than going through formal recruitment again cause your experience will most likely be the same or a little worse because you're older. Yes, they take sophomores, but it's harder the 2nd year, trust me. Good luck.

The same thing happened to me and I rushed again my sophomore year. I actually thought it was WAY easier as a sophomore. By then you already know girls in the houses, and you're involved in things on campus so you have more connections. I had an awesome resume my freshman year, but no one from my high school went to A&M. As a sophomore I not only knew people in houses, but I knew myself!! I knew what I wanted from a house and what kind of house I was looking for. I ended up getting my first choice house this year and I am ABSOLUTELY in love!!! I would recommended not doing spring, getting to know girls in houses, and rushing again in the fall!

Spend your first year getting to know sorority girls. THIS MEANS SO SO SO MUCH!! If you rush as a sophomore that is the main advantage and if you go in again not knowing anybody it won't increase your chances. I rushed freshman year then dropped and rushed again and I got my first choice. IT IS POSSIBLE

When y'all say meet people like introduce yourselves or become friends with them? Also how does knowing people in a sorority help? during recruitment do they talk about you to the other girls or something

Yes, during recruitment the actives discuss the PNMs. When they register, their name becomes available to all the houses. So if someone sees Jane Doe's name on the list, girls that know her are going to tell all of their friends in their sorority that they either like her or don't like her. My best friend rushed as a sophomore, and since I already knew her, I made sure everyone in my house knew who she was so she wouldn't get cut. Now, as to meeting girls in sororities, the best way is to join organizations that are full of sorority girls...Fish Camp and CARPOOL. Apply as soon as applications become available. Even if you are not that outgoing, apply anyway! I am very shy and got into CARPOOL and met so many people that way. It will also give you an edge during rush because sororities want girls involved on campus, and these two organizations are notorious for having outgoing, popular members on campus. Good luck!
