Houses prefer freshman over sophomores because they get fours years instead of three from them. Also, if a house can foresee a big graduating class in the near future, they will cut more sophomores during recruitment that year. It's not good for them to have too many girls graduate at once so they try to make up for it by taking more freshman the next year.

Freshman and sophomores do not compete against each other - there are separate quotas. You compete against sophomores & juniors for significantly fewer slots at every house. BUT that is because significantly fewer sophomores & juniors are still participating in recruitment by preference night - normally they have A house in mind, so they drop like flies. Ironically, they should be the ones that go in with the 'any sorority house' mentality -- if they did, more upper classmen would be admitted to ALL houses.Think about it, you're already not in the house that your friend is, so what if you join another house -- nothing has changed, except you too get to have your OWN sorority experience.
