I got dropped from every house today. I had recs, good grades, good resume, and legacy status. I wore nice clothes and I had good convos. It happened to my roommate to who has all of that plus friends in houses. Any idea what might have happened?

Rush is extremely competitive this year :/ it's nothing against you, I'm sure you did great, but with 1500 girls and 12 houses crazy cuts were bound to happen.

I am so sorry and feel your pain. The same thing happened to me, legacies and all. You may have the option to participate in Continual Open Recruitment if a house does not meet quota. If this is an option and you liked this house during rush then go for it. Did your Rho Gamma discuss this with you? I did COR and have been incredibly happy. So many girls go through rush some times I think houses make choices that in turn loose the chance to have nice girls like you. I would see if this is an option or consider Spring Rush.

By: COR a possibility?

One word is off in your description, COR eligible houses are houses not at TOTAL. They can still make quota - or even be over , it is the total number of active members that makes them eligible. How that happens? Early grads, late grads, transfers, & no longer members for various reasons ( grades, finances change, behavior, etc). Do not feel as COR houses are the ones who didn't maximize their pledge classes during recruitment. That is not necessarily true. Also if you take a junior, they will graduate 2 years prior to your freshman in the same pledge class. The good thing is that you have previewed all the houses, and when one has an opening you will know if it somewhere you'd like to join.

First of all, I am so very sorry! Take a few days to mourn the loss of this hope and dream. If possible, avoid all places having to do with rush tonight and tomorrow. It's going to sting for a few days.

There will be tons of opportunities to get involved on campus and build an exciting new life for yourself at college. The freshman leadership organizations are awesome and there are so many great churches, intramurals, spirit groups, etc.

If you have friends in any of the houses, let them know ASAP on bid day that you're interested in COB if their house is eligible this fall.

As for why you got dropped, unfortunately you'll probably never get an answer. A lot of times, the houses do want to invite you back but their party lists are full by the time they get to your name...later in the week, this is more likely than earlier when cuts are made for recs, grades, and reputation. You didn't do anything wrong, there were just more girls further up the list than you. Legacies are tough - houses have to balance honoring family traditions with wanting to bring in new women into their folds.

Another scenario that happens is when all week you had a "perfect" rush where the top houses were your preference and also kept inviting you back. The mid/bottom houses were off your party lists by day 2. Now the top houses haven't extended you an invite and the less competitive houses who wanted to keep now can't invite you to pref because you dropped them....that's why rush is called mutual

I was told by my local alumnae association that this was not possible as long as a PNM "maximized her options" and didn't "suicide". Did you not put down the max houses ever night when you ranked?

Stunned, you got bad info. During the week, PNM's can and do get completely dropped from rush. What your alumnae association said ONLY applies to Preference. Pref is the only round where the women invited WILL be on the house's bid list somewhere....maybe not the first list, but somewhere on the list. The houses know all women invited to pref could become members tomorrow.

If a pnm lists all of her pref houses tonight, she will get a bid from one of them tomorrow. If she only lists 1 house and their bid list fills before they get to her name, she has "suicided" and won't get a bid. If she lists all 3, and all 3 are full before they get to her name, she is a "quota addition" to her #1 choice....she maximized her options and therefore is awarded with her top choice, despite not being ranked highly on any of the 3 bid lists.

My guess is that the pnm above had a pretty good rush all week until today. She had enough houses inviting her back for 9 party so she didn't go back to her 3 bottom choice houses. Unfortunately, what most PNM's don't realize is that it's best to put 1 or 2 of the top houses on your least favorite 3 ranking after round 1. It increases your chances of having more party options later in the week and maybe finding a house you Iove outside the top 6.

Yes, a lot of times what happens is the first couple of rounds go really well for a PNM and all she has left are the most competitive houses. Over the first couple of rounds, she's been able to drop the less competitive houses and still have a full schedule. Then BOOM! All those competitive houses have her too low on their lists and recruitment is suddenly over for her. Sucks but it happens. That's why, just like in college admissions, it's smarter to keep a couple of safety houses in the mix from the start.

First, I wish I could come up with a better way so nobody feels bad. It's terrible and I am sorry and don't even know you. I think when this happens it takes a bit of the shine out of the whole experience for everyone, even those who get the houses they want as I suspect most want their friends to be happy too.

More important though is this is the start of college life so don't let a set back define you. Define yourself as a survivor, someone who finds more then one way to be happy as that is a skill that will last your whole life!

Best of luck.
